James Ervin, the Bedford County recreation official who loves to fly kites, recently received the Outstanding New Professional Award from the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society.
Ervin, who has his own kite-making business, travels to more than a dozen kite shows every year.
He is the county's parks and cemeteries supervisor, and was honored for his on-the-job and volunteer work. Classes he teaches include kite-flying, scuba diving, tree pruning, landscaping and horticulture, photography, and pesticide safety. He also helps with the maintenance of Bedford City's computer network.
Ervin, who started as a temporary worker in the parks department in 1992, is the new chairman of the society's Parks and Conservation section.
