The left southbound lane of Interstate 81 near the Rockbridge County/Augusta County border will be closed for up to a week to fix a cave-in.
Workers may have to dig down as much as 25 feet to reach earth firm enough to begin refilling the hole, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman said. On February 27, 1995, a cave-in closed both northbound lanes of I-81 near the Dixie Caverns exit in Roanoke County for several days.
