A Henry County minister and community activist is convening a conference in Richmond on Friday for black clergy, politicians and other leaders from around the state.
The Rev. Tyler Millner, pastor of Morning Star Holy Church in Martinsville, said the "Dominion 2000" conference hopes to draw more than 500 people and build a broader-based support group for black leaders in Virginia. "We need a real bona fide network of African-American leaders, and it ought to have a focus other than just being political," he said.
He said former Gov. Douglas Wilder will speak and U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and his Democratic opponent, Mark Warner, are among the politicians invited. Representatives of the NAACP and the state's black legislative caucus also are expected to participate.
The conference will be at Moore Street Baptist Church, 1408 W. Leigh Street in Richmond. Registration, which costs $15 and includes lunch, opens at 9 a.m. Reservations are being taken at (804) 257-7735 or by fax at (540) 650-1823.
