ANDERSON, David K. Jr., 30, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, October 5, 1996. He was preceded in death by his sister, Erika; and grandfather, John Burton. He is survived, loved and missed by his mother, Janet Burton Anderson; and special friend, Clinton Jones of Christiansburg; his grandmother, Kathleen R. Burton of Wise; family and friends in Virginia and Florida. David graduated from Va. Tech in 1988 with honors in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Naval Intelligence and engineering in Washington, D.C. and later for Contel/GTE in communications in Saudi Arabia before returning to Virginia. He was a decent, gentle person with a courageous sense of integrity, was perceptive and wise beyond his years. He was a man of value to those who took the time to know him. ``For in much wisdom is much grief, and he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow'' and suffers the iniquities of men. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Meadows. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. The family will receive friends at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted and donations be made to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24073.

BAUMGARDNER, Bessie Virginia, 99, of Rt. 1, Sugar Grove, (the Camp Community), died early Monday, October 7, 1996, in the Francis Marion Manor in Marion. She was the widow of French Baumgardner, and was a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church in Camp. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen B. and Felix Sidur of Ware, Mass., Clara Mae and Jerry Mohr of Rio Rancho, N.M.; one son and daughters-in-law, Marion Floyd and Ruth Baumgardner of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Leona B. (Tiny) Baumgardner of Sugar Grove; one sister, Mary F. Gross of Bluefield. Nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 1996, at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Dover-Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Blue Springs United Methodist Church or the church cemetery fund. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home, or at the residence of Leona (Tiny) Baumgardner at any time. BEARD, Francis Lee, 76, of Lexington, died Saturday, October 5, 1996 in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Beard was born January 3, 1920 in Rockbridge County a son of the late Rice Graham Beard and Gertrude Watts Beard. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and retired from V.M.I. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Muterspaw Beard. Surviving include his son, Daryl Lee Beard; one brother, W. V. (``Bill"") Beard, Lexington. BOWLES, Norris Carr, 83, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, October 6, 1996. He was preceded in death by a son, John Perry (``Trig"") Bowles; a brother, Jasper Bowles; a half brother, Reeves (``Bubba"") Brown; a half sister, Rebecc a Brown, and two stepchildren. Surviving are his wife, Frances J. FIGGATT, William E., 62, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a retired a truck driver and a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Surviving are his wife, Betty Greer Figgatt; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Jimmy Warren, Teresa and Randy Booze, Missy and Richard Atkins, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Spring Warren, Gloria Warren, Sabrine B. and husband, Kevin Shiferdek , Eddie Lee Booze, Andy Booze, Amanda Adkins and Aaron Atkins; one stepgranddaughter, Michelle Warren; one great stepgranddaughter, Erika Ann Warren; one sister, Betty Gish, Roanoke; one niece, Twila Washburn; two nephews, Brandon Washburn and Todd Gish. GOIN, Claircy Bell, 85, of Salem, passed from this life to be with our Lord on Monday, October 7, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leslie Goin; former husband, Early Fisher; a daughter, Lois Fisher Kirk; infant son, Early Fisher; brothers, Stephen Bell, Roscoe Bell, Robert Bell; great-granddaughter, Mindy Huddleston. LIGHT, Kate Givens, 91, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday evening, October 6, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred C. Light, was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and was a retired Assistant Director of Nursing from Community Hospital. Surviving are a son, Wilfred C. Light, Jr., Daleville; two daughters, Alice L. (Mrs. Carlos W.) Garrett, Edith L. (Mrs. Robert P.) Shelor, both of Roanoke; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. M. Dennis Herman officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. MILLS, Richard N., 56, of Natural Bridge, died Saturday, October 5, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Cancer Center. M r. Mills was born December 8, 1939, in Bluefield, W Va., a son of Elah Morgan Mills of Fayetteville, N.C., and the late Woodrow W. Mills Sr. He attended High Bridge Presbyterian Church and was a very avid ``Redskins"" fan. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Kathy R. Mills of Natural Bridge; two daughters, Cindy L. Cates of Roanoke and Cathy M. Hudgins of Blacksburg; two grandchildren, Allison and John Dyer, and seven sisters and brothers, Patricia Diamond and Thomas Mills of Florida, Rebecca Miguels and Woodrow W. Mills Jr. of Alabama, William R. Mills and Sherri Capace of Florida and James Scott Mills of North Carolina. PAVLICK, Lillian Rebecca Hunter Bush, 59, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, October 7, 1996 in a local hospital. She was an employee of Harris Teeter Food Stores. TORBETT, Eula Dee Ray, 84, of Salem, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996. She was a daughter of the late Walter J. and Beulah Ray of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Guilford Torbett; infant daughter, Jimmie Dee Torbett, and a sister, Willeen Ray Clevenger. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia Asher Bible Council and a retiree of Roy L. Webber Florist. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Ann T. and Gerald R. Swanson of Batavia, N.Y., Marilyn T. and Charles B. Humphreys of Salem, and Brenda T. Fulton of Salem; six grandchildren and spouses, Geoffrey R. and Mary D. Swanson of Syracuse, N.Y., Randall R. Swanson and Valerie M. Dawson of Santa Clara, Calif., James David Fulton of Davisville, W.Va., Lori F. and Michael S. Short of Waynesboro, Robert L. and Linda M. TURLEY, Harry Olen, 67, of Marion, died Monday, October 7, 1996, in the Smyth County Community Hospital. Mr. Turley was a life-long resident of Smyth County. He retired from the concrete business with 45 years of service. He was a member of the Stone Memorial Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty Turley, Marion; beloved niece and caregiver, Pat Mezardash, Frederick, Md.; one sister, Ruby Hounshell, Wytheville; two brothers, Alan Turley, Wytheville, Curtis Turley, Chilhowie. Funeral services for Mr. Turley will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brian Childress and the Rev. Weston Guthrie officiating. WALBRIDGE, Lillian S., 99, a long time resident of the New River Valley, passed away Saturday, October 5, 1996 at Camelot Hall in Salem. Surviving are a daughter, Anna W. Beck; grandson, Adam Beck, Carmel, Calif.; brother, Floyd Stanton, Roanoke. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 1996 at Grace Episcopal Church in Radford.

WETZEL, Harriet Burton, 75, of Roanoke, and formerly of Wise Avenue, S.E., died Monday, October 7, 1996 in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Salem, and was a life member of the Credit Women's International. She was employed by a number of local businesses as a bookkeeper. She was the widow of Fritz Frederick Wetzel, Jr. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Jill Wetzel; three grandchildren, Savannah, Hannah and Noah, all of Folkston, Ga.; a sister, Annabelle Saunders, Roanoke; brothers, Jack Burton, Richmond, Clayton Burton, Roanoke; Warren Burton and Alfred Burton, both of Portsmouth; a loyal friend and sister-in-law, Joyce Keaton; a host of friends and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted from Calvary United Methodist Church, Salem, 2 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 1996, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery. WHITENACK, Leo Crawford, 71, of Floyd, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 5, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Mary Susan Castle Whitenack, Floyd; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Leo Castle Whitenack, Charlottesville, Lynn Crawford and Marilen Whitenack, Roanoke; two grandchildren, Matthew Whitenack, Kerry Whitenack, both of Atlanta, Ga.
