SENIOR ID CARDS AVAILABLE THIS MONTH

Senior identification cards, which qualify holders for discounts at participating businesses and special services, will be available at several locations in October. To get one, you must bring proof that you are at least 60 years old and your Social Security number. A $1.50 donation is requested but not required.

The cards will be available at: The Giles County Senior Center on Wenonah Avenue in Pearisburg Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon; Pine Ridge Apartments on Penn Avenue in Floyd Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon; New River Valley Agency on Aging on East Main Street in Pulaski Oct. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.; the Radford Senior Center on First Street Oct. 23 from noon to 2 p.m.; the Blacksburg Senior Center on Patrick Henry Drive Oct. 25 from noon to 2 p.m.; and the Christiansburg Senior Center on Montgomery Street Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon. People who are restricted to their homes should call the New River Valley Agency on Aging at 980-7720 or 639-9677 for arrangements.

Flu and pneumonia shots will be given at the Pulaski Senior Center today from 10 a.m. to noon and Oct. 23 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The shots are free to Medicare and Medicaid recipients with valid cards. For others the cost is $7 for a flu shot and $15 for a pneumonia shot. For information, call 980-1000, ext. 60. Flu, pneumonia and tetanus shots will be given Monday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Christiansburg. Flu shots are $7, pneumonia shots are $15, and tetanus shots are $3.50. They are free to Medicare and Medicaid recipients with a valid card. For more information, call 381-7100 or 382-8173. Flu shots will be given Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Blacksburg Senior Center. They are free to Medicare and Medicaid recipients, and $9 for others.

RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, 1 Franklin St., Courthouse Annex, Christiansburg. Victoria Scott, 382-5775:

*Today, 10 a.m., both Christiansburg groups go to Heritage Hall.

*Thursday, 9 a.m., volunteers meet at the Courthouse Annex to begin making Christmas stockings for adult and nursing home residents.

*Tuesday, 2 p.m., the Warm Hearth group will go to Meadowbrook.

*The 18th annual senior arts and crafts fair is Oct. 18 from 5 to 9 p.m., and Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the National Guard Armory. The free event will feature a variety of handmade goods, food and door prizes.
