Suzanne Webb scored 22 points Tuesday night in Narrows as the Green Wave defeated Galax 59-48 to remain unbeaten in the Mountain Empire District girls' basketball race.
The teams were tied at 29 at halftime, but Narrows (11-3, 6-0) turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter to take over. Webb scored nine points in the period as the Green Wave outscored Galax 17-8.
Bud Lucas had 16 points for the game and Tara Collins added 11.
Erin Kyle scored 17 points for Galax (8-5, 4-1) and Catherine Cockerham added 16.
Fort Chiswell 72, Rocky Gap 65: The Pioneers exploded for 27 points in the second quarter of a high-scoring Mountain Empire District matchup in Fort Chiswell.
Rocky Gap led by as much as 14 in the second quarter before the Pioneers (7-6 overall, 5-2 district) rallied. Their press slowed the Eagles just enough.
Amy Coleman and Kristen Harmon led Fort Chiswell with 17 points apiece. Coleman also had 12 rebounds. Pam Shumate and Toshia Smith joined them in double figures.
Tessa Andrews and Michelle Sarver each had three 3-pointers for the Eagles. Andrews had 24 points and Sarver 15. Jamie Johnstone added 13.
Auburn 69, Giles 49: The Eagles used a pressure defense in the first half to force 16 turnovers and open up a 34-19 halftime lead before cruising past the Spartans in Riner in a Three Rivers District affair.
Susan Wirt and freshman starter Sarah Black tallied 16 points apiece to lead a balanced scoring attack for Auburn (6-8 overall, 1-2 Three Rivers), which was outrebounded 43-24 and scored just five points from the line in the second half.
Laura Underwood added 15 points and Deanna Dickerson 12 for the Eagles, who had four people score in double figures for the first time this season.
Kristen White scored 15 points and Erin Williams added 14 for Giles (4-8, 0-3), which committed 27 turnovers. White also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Martinsville 73, Fieldale-Collinsville 66: Erica Brandon scored 23 points as the Bulldogs held off the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game in Collinsville.
Tekeshia Mitchell and Tiffany Watkins added 16 points each for Martinsville and Latonya Martin scored 10.
Jennifer Witt and Jennifer Floyd scored 16 points each for Fieldale-Collinsville.
Bassett 62, Magna Vista 39: Heather Miller led three Bengals in double figures with 20 points as Bassett downed the Warriors in a Piedmont District matchup in Ridgeway.
Magna Vista put up plenty of shots but couldn't get them to fall, particularly in the second quarter, when it was outscored 22-4.
Amber Byer had 13 points and April Merriman 10 for the Bengals. Sandi Reid led the Warriors (6-6 overall, 1-2 district) with 18.
Lord Botetourt 56, Christiansburg 32: The Cavaliers got their fast break going off rebounds and pulled out a Blue Ridge District victory in Daleville.
Sarah Hicks led three double-figure scorers with 18 points. Sara Moore added 14 and Amy Bird had 11.
Amber Reed and Lisa Dalton paced the Blue Demons with nine and eight, respectively. Christiansburg fell to 7-6 overall, 2-5 in the district.
Covington 54, Craig County 19: Forward Melissa Page had a season-high 20 points as the Cougars downed the Rockets in a Pioneer District matchup in Covington.
Page stepped in relief of 1995 all-Timesland second-teamer Joann Helton, who missed most of the game with an upset stomach. Charity Tyree also had a career high 11 points for Covington (7-4 overall, 3-0 district).
Jody Harden led Craig County (1-11, 1-2) with 11 points.
The Cougars made 24 of 44 free throws in the game. Page hit 10 of 18.
Glenvar 53, Radford 37: Erika Hale scored 14 points as the Highlanders came from behind to defeat Three Rivers District opponent Radford on the road.
Hale also contributed nine rebounds as the Highlanders (9-5, 2-1) overcame a 20-14 halftime deficit. They led 29-24 after the third quarter and the Bobcats sent them to the free-throw line often in the fourth.
The Highlanders hit 12 of 14 free-throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Amy Layman added 10 points.
Charlee Taylor led the Bobcats (8-6, 1-2) with 16 points.
Staunton River 49, Appomattox Co. 43: Penny Forrest scored 25 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Raiders in a Seminole District matchup in Appomattox.
Staunton River improved to 7-6 overall, 5-1 in the district.
Princess Womack led Appomattox with 15 points and Kay Kay Moore had 10. The Raiders rallied with 19 points in the final quarter, but still fell short. Appomattox is 6-8, 1-5.
Patrick County 55, Laurel Park 44: The Cougars hit nine of 14 free throws in the final three minutes to pull away from the Lancers in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.
Summer East paced Patrick County (12-2, 2-1) with 15 points, and Alison Brammer had 13, including three from the line in the crucial stretch. Geneva Hilton added 12 for the Cougars, who hit 20-of-30 points from the charity stripe in the game.
Brandy Martin led Laurel Park (8-5, 2-1) with 17 points and Tiffany Lynch added 14.
William Byrd 63, Alleghany 51: The Terriers won the transition game in the second and third quarters to notch a Blue Ridge District victory in Vinton.
William Byrd (11-2, 6-1) outscored the Mountaineers 35-26 in the decisive middle quarters to stave off pesky Alleghany.
Stephanie Parnell (16 points) and Brandy Allen (15) led William Byrd's offensive attack.
Alleghany got 16 points from Natasha Chapman and 15 from Katie Craft. Each had a trio of 3-point field goals.
James River 53, Bath County 35: Amy Sprinkle scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights fought off the Chargers in a Pioneer District matchup in Hot Springs.
Nakia Burrell also had a big fourth quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points. The Knights (3-8, 1-2) possessed a slim 31-27 lead after the third quarter but outscored the Chargers 22-8 in the fourth.
Bath County (5-7, 1-2) was led by Katie Hardbarger, who scored 16 points.
Parry McCluer 59, Highland 22: Junior guard Lindsey Coleman led the way as the Fighting Blues coasted to a Pioneer District victory over the Rams in Buena Vista.
Coleman had 24 points, doubling the next highest scorer. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, made five steals, and dished three assists.
The Fighting Blues (8-5, 3-0) pressed early and opened a 35-7 halftime lead after holding the Rams scoreless in the second quarter.
Tammy Shifflett lead the way for the Rams (2-7, 0-3) with 12 points.
Grayson County 56, Pocahontas 46: The Blue Devils burst out of a timeout with 3:45 to go before the half, scoring nine points and never looking back in a Mountain Empire District matchup in Independence.
Grayson County, which cut the Indians' lead to two points at halftime, outscored their guests 36-24 in the second half.
The Blue Devils (4-10 overall, 3-3 district) were led by Lindsey Carico's 17 points and Mandy Smith's 14. Smith, a point guard, had four 3-pointers.
Mandy Dawson had 14 points for Pocahontas.
Blacksburg 62, Rockbridge County 43: Andrea Feret scored 14 points and Karley Geller added 12 as the Indians kept the Wildcats winless with a Blue Ridge District victory in Lexington.
Blacksburg jumped out to a 35-15 halftime lead and rolled to victory.
Kate Ides scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Rockbridge County (0-12).
Marion 45, George Wythe 38: Allison Jennings scored 18 points as Marion stopped George Wythe in a non-district game at Marion.
The Maroons were paced by Megan Johnson with 18 points.
