BYRD RUNS AWAY FROM ALLEGHANY

William Byrd won the transition game in the second and third quarters and went on to a 63-51 victory over Alleghany on Tuesday night in a Blue Ridge District game in Vinton.

The Terriers (11-2 overall, 6-1 district) outscored Alleghany 35-26 in the decisive middle quarters to stave off the pesky Mountaineers.

Stephanie Parnell (16 points) and Brandy Allen (15) led William Byrd's attack.

Alleghany got 16 points from Natasha Chapman and 15 from Katie Craft. Each had a trio of 3-point field goals.

James River 53, Bath County 35: Amy Sprinkle scored 10 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Knights fought off the Chargers in a Pioneer District matchup in Hot Springs.

Nakia Burrell also had a big fourth quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points. The Knights (3-8, 1-2) possessed a four-point lead after the third quarter, but outscored Bath County 22-8 in the fourth.

The Chargers (5-7, 1-2) were led by Katie Hardbarger, who scored 16 points.

Lord Botetourt 56, Christiansburg 32: The Cavaliers got their fast break going off the boards and pulled out a Blue Ridge District victory in Daleville.

Sarah Hicks led three double-figure scorers, with 18 points. Sara Moore added 14 and Amy Bird had 11.

Amber Reed and Lisa Dalton paced the Blue Demons (7-6, 2-5) with nine and eight, respectively.

Covington 54, Craig County 19: Forward Melissa Page had a season-high 20 points as the Cougars downed the Rockets in a Pioneer District matchup in Covington.

Page stepped in relief of 1995 All-Timesland second-teamer Joann Helton, who missed most of the game with an upset stomach. Charity Tyree also had a career high 11 points for Covington (7-4, 3-0).

Jody Harden led Craig County (1-11, 1-2) with 11 points.

The Cougars made 24 of 44 free throws in the game. Page hit 10 of 18.

Glenvar 53, Radford 37: Erika Hale scored 14 points as the Highlanders came from behind to defeat Three Rivers District opponent Radford on the road.

Hale also contributed nine rebounds as the Highlanders (9-5, 2-1) overcame a six-point halftime deficit. They led 29-24 after the third quarter, and the Bobcats sent them to the free-throw line often in the fourth.

The Highlanders hit 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Amy Layman added 10 points.

Charlee Taylor led the Bobcats (8-6, 1-2) with 16 points.
