The Virginia Corporation Commission will let the marketplace determine the cost of professional liability insurance for lawyers.
The commission said Tuesday a competitive market now exists for that type of insurance, so companies offering such policies can begin charging new rates as soon as they are filed with the state regulators.
The policy since 1989 has required SCC approval before companies could begin imposing new premium rates.
The commission ruled that the market for professional liability insurance covering medical professionals, insurance agents, real estate agents, volunteer fire departments and rescue squads is still noncompetitive.
