Board presents traffic safety awards
The Blue Ridge Community Traffic Safety Board presented its annual awards at a recent luncheon at the Vinton War Memorial.
Among those honored for contributions in the Roanoke Valley were:
*Marine Staff Sgt. Frank Hall, who rescued a teen-age couple from their burning car Sept. 24 on Interstate 581, Traffic Safety Award of Valor.
*John Markey, former chairman of People Against Impaired Drivers, Pelton Award for outstanding leadership in DUI prevention and education.
*Chauncey Lincoln Logan Sr., former local representative to the Commonwealth of Virginia Transportation Safety Board, Regional Traffic Safety Volunteer of the Year.
*James B. Ringer, president and district manager, Farmers Insurance Group, Outstanding Community Leadership Award.
*Virginia State Police, Sixth Division, Outstanding State Project Award for implementing the Safe and Sober Campaign.
*1995 Joint DUI Sobriety Checkpoint, a regional partnership of law enforcement agencies, Outstanding Regional Project Award.
*1995 Safe Rides Program, a Roanoke Valley community project providing rides home during the holiday season, Outstanding Community Project Award.
Stress-reduction classes offered
The Lewis-Gale Medical Foundation will offer a series of stress-reduction classes beginning Oct. 30.

`ZooBoo' party for Halloween
The "ZooBoo" Halloween party at Mill Mountain Zoo will be held Oct. 26, from 1-4 p.m. Activities include a scavenger hunt, costume parade, piata breaking and more. Mill Mountain Zoo will hold a "Breakfast with the Animals" on Saturday from 8:30-10 a.m. A free breakfast will be provided by Kroger and Kellogg's Cereal. Admission is $4 for adults, $3.60 for seniors and $2.75 for children 2-12. For more information, call 343-3241.
Chrysanthemum show set at mall
The Blue Ridge Chrysanthemum Society's annual show will be held Saturday and Sunday at Valley View Mall. The display will include 350-400 blooms in all colors and varieties as well as tree forms, bonsai, baskets and bloom boards. For more information, call Louisa Breeden, 366-4497.
Basketball signups for Roanoke youths
The Southwest Athletic Association will hold youth basketball signups for participation in the city of Roanoke recreation leagues Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at the Department of Parks and Recreation Building, 210 Reserve Ave. S.W.

`Saturday Fun' kicks off at YWCA
"Saturday Fun," a program for children ages 51/2-12, will be offered on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the YWCA of Roanoke Valley. Activities will include swimming, field trips and arts and crafts. Lunch will be provided.

Craft and bake sale for elderly
LOA Area Agency on Aging will hold a Craft and Bake Sale on Oct. 19, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Eagle Rock Community Center. The proceeds will benefit the Senior Companion Program, a LOA program that encourages volunteerism among seniors.
