WALT SCOTT of Roanoke has been named a Second Quarter Quality Award winner by Oakwood Homes Corp., a producer of manufactured houses. Scott is part of a nine-member team of Oakwood employees who created a manual and video on home installation for contractors to use to increase customer satisfaction and decrease waste and error.

GREENE LAWSON of Waldrop Realty in Roanoke recently was awarded the Graduate Realtor Institute designation by the Virginia Association of Realtors. The Virginia GRI program is certified and approved by the National Association of Realtors.

KYMBERLY MAY, a massage therapist at Health Touch in the Haas Chiropractic Center in Salem, has passed a written examination and has been certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Her practice consists of Swedish massage, deep tissue message and myofascial release work.

MARTHA JONES has been presented the 16th annual Secretary's Hands and Hearts Award at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Jones, who is a gastrointestinal endoscopy nurse at the center, was cited for her sustained, compassionate and thoughtful patient care.

BLUE RIDGE COUNTRY magazine, published by Leisure Publishing in Roanoke, has received two major awards from the International Regional Magazine Association in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The magazine was awarded a gold medal in the history feature category for "A Hyphenated Life," the story of Siamese twins who spent their adult life in the North Carolina mountains. Blue Ridge Country also received a silver medal in the essays and columns category for Elizabeth Hunter's column, "Sparks of the Living Firework," about the unrelenting motherliness of the crab spider.

Roanoke brokerage firm BOONE & CO. has been ranked 194th in the real estate newsletter REAL Trends' top 350 of the largest residential real estate brokerage firms in the nation. According to the newsletter's research, Boone & Co. closed 2,106 residential transactions last year.

GARY M. HERSHMAN of Salem has been named the Horace Mann Companies' 1995 Agency Manager of the Year. He received the honor for the third consecutive year at the annual leadership conference of the educators' insurance group. Hershman, Blue Ridge Agency manager, has been employed by Horace Mann since 1977.

JOHN C. BRAKE of John C. Brake and Associates in Vinton has been named to the Million Dollar Round Table, an independent, international association of life insurance producers that recognizes outstanding sales performance.

DR. KIRK E. HIPPENSTEEL of Roanoke has been awarded the American Lung Association of Virginia's highest honor, the Douglas Southall Freeman Award. Hippensteel has been on the association's state board of directors for 14 years and has been its president for the past two years. He is a pulmonary physician at Roanoke Memorial and Community hospitals, both part of Carilion Health System.

RICHARD W. COON, account executive for Thomas Rutherfoord Inc., has earned the associate in risk management (ARM) designation after completing three national exams administered by the Insurance Institute of America.

BERNARD P. SANDERS, with American Express Financial Advisors Inc., has been named a Master Advisor by the company. He was honored for being in the top echelon of the company's field force and for exceeding stringent financial-planning and client-service requirements.

M. RUPERT CUTLER, executive director of Virginia's Explore Park, a living history and nature park in Roanoke and Bedford counties, was presented an Allied Professional Award by the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

I.N. McNEIL ROOFING & SHEET METAL CO. INC. has received the 1996 Partner in Quality award from Firestone Building Products Co. This award is based on the performance of roofing systems over a period of time, in this case from 1988 through 1990.

T. JOE CRAWFORD, assistant vice president and corporate secretary at Roanoke Electric Steel Corp., has received the Bronze Leadership Award recognizing his contribution to Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia Inc. He was honored by JA's national office for his outstanding volunteer performance.

JON M. DABAREINER, a personal financial adviser with American Express Financial Advisors Inc., has been named a Master Advisor for outstanding performance in the company's field force and for exceeding financial planning and client service requirements.

FRANK FOLEY and CHRIS CAVENESS have earned membership in the Million Dollar Round Table, an international, independent association of leading life insurance producers. Foley and Caveness are field underwriters with Mutual of New York's The Capital Group agency.

MARILYN R. DONATO, a registered dietitian in private practice, has completed a course, Treatment of Obesity and Eating Disorders: New Paradigms for the 21st Century, sponsored by the Harvard Medical School's department of continuing education in Boston. Donato is associated with the Center for Bariatric Medicine in Roanoke and is immediate past president of the Roanoke Academy of Medicine Alliance.

J. DANIEL PACE JR., a financial representative with Signet Financial Services in Roanoke, has been recognized by Kemper Distributors Inc. for having attained a high level of retirement plan sales of Kemper products.

MITCHELL W. SYLVESTER of Bergman Chevrolet in Roanoke recently took top honors in Chevrolet's Professional Service Council Regional area competition. Mitchell was named best in his chapter for criteria that included customer satisfaction, special training and superior exam scores.

DENNIS K. GOODMAN, who is an associate with The Franklin Life Insurance Co., has passed the Series 6 and 63 securities exams. He is now able to sell variable annuities and mutual funds offered by the American Franklin Life Insurance Co. and Franklin Financial Services.

PATRICK W. GRAVES has been awarded the certified residential specialist (CRS) designation by the Residential Sales Council, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Graves is an associate broker with Gearhart-Stevens Realtors. He has been a Realtor in Roanoke for more than 15 years.

THE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OF VIRGINIA has announced that Christopher Gauss, Jeffrey Hall and Christopher Wright of Roanoke, all members of the Blue Ridge Agency, have been named members of the 1996 President's Roundtable. Membership in the roundtable is based on sales performance and career experience.

RICHARD MULLINS of Salem has been chosen an Eagle Winner by L.B. Smith Inc., a distributor of heavy construction, mining and quarry equipment. Mullins was honored for his excellence in sales professionalism and customer service at the company's annual dinner.

TRACY A. GILES has received the R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Award for Young Lawyer of the Year by the Young Lawyers Conference of the Virginia State Bar. Giles was selected from more than 8,000 members of the Young Lawyers Conference. He is a member of Giles and Lambert law firm in Roanoke.

At SALEM BANK AND TRUST, Melissa Coleman, Patricia Leonard, Claudia Stanley and Lucinda Welsh have been promoted to administrative assistants. Coleman is at the bank's Oak Grove office, Leonard works at the Hollins office, Stanley is at the South Salem office and Welsh works in operations and human resource areas of the bank.
