'Rocky Horror Picture Show'

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech "Rocky Horror Picture Show" Fan Club will sponsor showings of the popular cult film this weekend at the Lyric Theatre on College Avenue. The first show is tonight at 10 with consecutive shows Friday and Saturday at midnight.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, cast members act along with what's happening on screen while the audience talks back to the film's characters. The audience also participates in throwing rice during a wedding scene and toast when a speech is made during dinner. Members of the Tech fan club will make up the cast at the Lyric Theatre showings.

Tickets are $3 and go on sale an hour before each show. Proceeds will go towards the Lyric's restoration project. Call the theater at 951-0604.

Montgomery board applicants sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors is seeking applicants for appointment to the adjustment and appeals board. This board meets to hear appeals regarding decisions made by the building inspector. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis. The appointment is for a five-year term.

Applicants must be Montgomery County residents who are registered voters and in good tax standing. Letters of intent should be submitted to Betty S. Thomas, county administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073-0806. Deadline is Oct. 21.

Big Brothers orientation set

CHRISTIANSBURG - Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New River Valley will have a volunteer orientation at 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Christiansburg library.

Volunteers need to be 18 years old, have a car and be able to serve four hours a week for one year (or three semesters if they are students). Two forms of photo identification are required and a $2 donation for notary fee. Call 381-0662.

Dublin mayor honored

HOT SPRINGS - Dublin Mayor Benny Keister is among six Virginians recognized by the Virginia Economic Developers Association for volunteer efforts in attracting new industries and retaining their existing industrial base in their communities.

Keister was instrumental in the negotiations that resulted in Dublin acquiring the former Burlington Industries property, now added to the town as the Dublin Industrial Park and Dublin Town Center. He and five other people were recognized at the association's annual meeting in Hot Springs last month.

Fine arts shop gets facelift

PULASKI - Renovations to the gallery and gift shop of the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley have been completed.

The month-long task of installing new carpet and painting the walls has given the interior a new look.

The gift shop has been moved to an area at the rear of the gallery. This leaves more open space for shoppers and gallery viewers.

Annette Perry, a volunteer, and Sue Perry, her daughter, spent hours developing a new look for the gift shop and devising new displays to better present the fine art and craft merchandise from throughout Virginia.

The center at 21 W. Main St. in Pulaski is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Call 980-7363.

Breast health registration

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Carilion hospitals are offering free breast exams, personal education and regularly priced mammograms on Oct. 26, Breast Health Day.

The event will occur at Carilion Radford Community Hospital and Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg.

AAUW Day next weekend

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg branch of the American Association of University Women will have AAUW Days at Bonomo's on University City Boulevard in Blacksburg Oct. 18 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Members will provide information about the group, and sell Georgia pecans, New Hampshire maple syrup and calendars. Proceeds will benefit the association's Educational Foundation Program, which funds education, research and scholarships for women. Call Lindsay West at 552-2023.

RU 'Community Speaking' schedule

RADFORD - Radford University's "Community Speaking" airs on American Cable Entertainment Channel 9, at 6 p.m. Sundays, 5 p.m. Tuesdays, noon Wednesdays and at 7 p.m. Thursdays.

The current program features Parks Lanier, a Radford University English professor conversing with Bill Brown and Elizabeth McCommon, two of the featured authors of the 1996 Highland Summer Conference. Brown is a poet and author. McCommon is an author, teacher, singer, musician and actress. Call 831-5180.
