WILLIAM C. HARRIS, CRESTAR BANK CEO OF D.C./MD. GROUP, DIES

The brother of F. Edward Harris, president of the western region of Crestar Bank, based in Roanoke, died Tuesday at his home in Alexandria.

William C. Harris, 58, was chairman and chief executive officer of Crestar Bank's greater Washington/Maryland banking group and participated in the recent merger agreement between Crestar and Citizens Bank of Laurel, Md., a prepared statement from Crestar Bank said.

He became chairman and chief executive last year after serving nine years as president of the bank's greater Washington region.

In 1995, Harris was named "Leader of the Years" by the Greater Washington Board of Trade and "Washingtonian of the Year" by Washingtonian Magazine.

While working in the banking industry, Harris was a member of the Virginia Bankers Association Federal Government Relations Committee, on the senior executive advisory committee of the Maryland/D.C. Minority Supplier Development Council, and delegate to the American Bankers Association's Leadership Conference, the statement said.

Harris also was involved in many community and civic activities.
