HAYMARKET: A SILLY STRING-FREE ZONE?

Silly String is no laughing matter in this Prince William County town.

Town officials, reacting to the mess left on cars, buildings and people during a recent Haymarket Day festival, are considering banning the toy plastic foam.

``It sounds silly,'' said Councilman Mark Branca. ``But looking at the impacts and how it was misused and abused by many people spraying cars, spraying people, it was just a large annoyance. It made a big mess.''

For one thing, the nontoxic, neon-colored string that is launched from aerosol cans was sprayed on prized antique cars that took part in the Sept. 21 Haymarket Day parade.

The council will discuss the ban at its next meeting Nov. 4.
