Adventures for Kids volunteers needed

Adventures for Kids, an after-school club for children ages 6-11, is looking for volunteers. The program, held at Hurt Park and Fallon Park elementary schools and Huff Lane Micro Village, pays $50 per month to adult and youth leaders.

NAACP banquet set for Oct. 18

The Roanoke branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold its Life Membership Banquet Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center.

Douglas Covington, president of Radford University, will speak.

Vinton seeks board, commission members

Vinton residents interested in serving on council-appointed boards, commissions and committees may apply at the town manager's office, 311 South Pollard St., or call 983-0607 to have an application mailed.

Positions appointed by council include members of the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Vinton Planning Commission, the Fair Housing Board, the Highway Safety Commission and the Greenway Committee.

The list of applicants maintained on file is updated each year.

Teach English to refugees

Volunteers are being sought by the Refugee and Immigration Services office to help newly arrived refugees from Bosnia, Haiti, Cuba, Iraq and Vietnam learn English.

Prior teaching experience or knowledge is not necessary. Scheduling is flexible and training is available.

Lunchtime Express comes to museum

The Virginia Museum of Transportation Inc. is offering a special lunchtime program for children ages 3 to 5.

Lunchtime Express will take place each Wednesday from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. at the museum through Nov. 6. The fee is $7 per session.

Children will focus on a specific transportation topic at each meeting and create projects.

Business Expo scheduled Oct. 17

The Vinton Business Expo 1996 sponsored by the Vinton Area Chamber of Commerce will be held Oct. 17 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Vinton War Memorial.

Businesses will have booths set up with prize drawings, refreshments, a fashion show and other entertainment.

The event is free.

Activities scheduled at the RBC center

Rebuilding the Black Community Inc. will commemorate the first anniversary of the Million Man March on Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the RBC Learning Center, 2310 Melrose Ave. Activities will include a clothes giveaway to families in need, a panel and group discussion on issues that affect the community, voter registration, free blood pressure tests and refreshments.

On Oct. 19 the RBC will hold a March for Family Unity Day. At 10 a.m., a march will begin at the RBC center and will proceed to Washington Park on Orange Avenue. At the park from 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be speakers, gospel choirs and vendors. To volunteer or for more information, call the RBC Learning Center at 982-8597.

Free batteries for city residents

The Roanoke Fire-EMS Department is introducing the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" campaign encouraging residents to change smoke detector batteries when turning back clocks this fall. The department will offer free batteries to city residents through October. Batteries are available at all city fire stations.

Cave Spring band sells citrus fruit

The Cave Spring High School Band will be taking orders for Florida citrus fruit including navel and hamlin oranges, pink grapefruit and tangelos through Nov. 22. Gift boxes may be shipped anywhere in the country. To place an order, call the Cave Spring band at 772-7573.

Walk for animals Nov. 2 in Salem

The first "Walk for H.O.P.E." (Helping Our Pet-overpopulation Explosion) to benefit Salem's Spay Day project will be held Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. at Longwood Park. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Shelter No.2 for the three-mile walk around Longwood Park's fitness circuit.

T-shirts and other awards will be presented to participants collecting a minimum of $25. No pets are allowed, but donations of stuffed animals for the community Christmas store are welcome. For more information, call 375-3038.

Free radon-testing kits available

Free home radon-testing kits are available to the first 100 people who call the American Lung Association of Virginia Oct. 21 at 362-5864. After the free kits are distributed, callers may get the kits, valued at $20, for $7 by asking for a coupon and leaving a name and address on the answering machine.

Radon, the second-leading cause of lung cancer, is an odorless, colorless gas that can seep into homes from the soil and rock beneath foundations.

YMCA helps people learn to swim

Swim lessons for adults, children and infants will begin the week of Oct. 21 at the Central Branch of the YMCA of the Roanoke Valley. Class fees range from $18-$40. Days and times of the classes vary. For class schedules or more information, call 342-9622.

Clean Valley Council accepting nominations

The Clean Valley Council is seeking nominations of individuals, groups or institutions who have worked to preserve, protect and enhance the environment in the Roanoke Valley. Award categories include education, cleanup, recycling, government agency and excellence.

Nominations must include the name, address and telephone number of the nominee, a contact person and phone number, an award category, the name of the nominator and a description in 250 words or less of the environmental project. Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 18. For more information, call the Clean Valley Council at 345-5523.

Composting process to be explained

Workshops in backyard composting will be offered by the Clean Valley Council and John Arbogast of the Virginia Cooperative Extension. The workshops will explain how to use composting to recycle leaves, grass clippings and small prunings.

Workshops will be offered Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 18 at 10 a.m., and Oct. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Virginia Western Community College. The fee is $10. Registration is required.

Workshop to focus on child's education

The Southwest Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education is sponsoring a "Planning for Success Starts Early" conference and luncheon Oct. 19 at the Holiday Inn-Tanglewood 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Workshop topics will include improving communication skills and building children's self-esteem.

The keynote speaker is Donna Thornton, executive director of the National Association of Child Care Professionals.
