Pants ad shortly turns a bit too hot to handle

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. - The television commercial shows a man running into a burning house - to save a pair of pants. But the ad drew some fire of its own and is being withdrawn by the Haggar Apparel Corp.

City Fire Chief Michael Shafer said he complained to Haggar about the commercial, and the Dallas-based clothes marketer told him this week it was removing the ad for review.

Shafer said he was upset because the commercial - in which the man re-enters the burning house, apparently to save a parrot, but then grabs the slacks - ``shows children that it is OK to go back in. We try to teach them that once you're out, you're out.''

If the commercial were real life, the actor would have died after taking three steps inside from the intense heat of the fire, Shafer said. Firefighters often have a problem restraining people who want to go back into burning buildings to retrieve possessions, he said.

Shafer said Haggar also received phone calls about the ad.

Monsanto may stop making chemicals

ST. LOUIS - Monsanto is thinking of stepping out of nylon and slipping into cotton.

Nearly 100 years after getting its start in the chemical business, Monsanto sees a brighter future in the fields that are growing its genetically altered cotton plants.

The company said Thursday it is looking at several options for its chemical business - from keeping and restructuring it to a spinoff or outright sale.

Wall Street sent Monsanto's stock 3 percent higher Thursday. The company said there was no timetable for making a decision, only that ``we'll move as fast as we can.''

Monsanto's chemical segment produces nylon carpet fiber, plastic used in car windshields and other types of glass, and specialty chemicals such as resins and coatings.
