Three Pulaski County High School students brought that school its first Triple-A division win in the 23rd annual Mathematics Rally held this week at Radford University.
Seniors Graham Fizer and Ben Rudisill and junior King Chan wrested the title away from E.C. Glass High School, which has been the most frequent winner in recent years. E.C. Glass finished second and Cave Spring High School, third.
Chan also finished first overall in individual AAA competition and will receive a $100 prize. Rudisill won third place overall. Last year, Fizer took first place in the overall competition and the Pulaski County High School team finished second.
Radford High School was first in Single-A competition this year. In addition, its team members - seniors Jed Singer and Evan Gregory and sophomore Mark Tong - tied for the individual honors.
Blacksburg High finished second among Double-A schools.
More than 140 students representing 47 high schools from throughout Virginia took part in the Math Rally, sponsored by Radford University's Department of Mathematics and Statistics. "We see the Math Rally as one way of recognizing excellence in mathematics," J.D. Hansard, professor of mathematics, said earlier this year in invitations to participate in the rally.
