TECH LOSES CUSTIS FOR 2-3 WEEKS

The Virginia Tech basketball team got good news Thursday when physicians revealed that Ace Custis will miss only two or three weeks of practice after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Doctors trimmed a cartilage tear in Custis' knee in the surgical procedure performed Thursday afternoon at Montgomery Regional Hospital. The star senior forward suffered the injury Sept.19 in a conditioning drill.

Originally, it was thought the injury was a lateral sprain, but because of continued swelling in the knee, physicians decided on Thursday's surgery.

* In Lexington, Leighton Kirby scored two goals as Washington and Lee defeated Roanoke 3-1 to win a key Old Dominion Athletic Conference women' soccer game. The win gives the Generals (8-2, 6-1) an edge in the battle for second place in the conference.

Kirby put W&L on the board with a goal off a deflected corner kick, but Roanoke (9-4, 6-2) answered when Meredith Arnott headed in teammate Laura Pecorale's cross. Ten minutes later, Erica Reineke scored off an assist by Allison Warner to seal the win. Kirby added an insurance goal with 31/2 minutes left in the first half.

* Ali Ogelsby scored two goals, including the game winner at the 39:27 mark, to lead Roanoke past Bridgewater 4-3 in an ODAC field hockey match in Bridgewater. The Eagles (7-4, 4-3) outshot the Maroons 46-26, but goalkeeper Jen Pohanka made 19 saves for Roanoke (6-4, 4-2).

*After five weeks of fall practice, the Virginia Tech softball team will take the field at the Radford Invitational at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem. Tech will play three games today, starting with Catawba at 9a.m., followed by Radford at 10:45a.m. and Longwood at 2p.m. Saturday's games will start single-elimination play of the tournament.

* In Hillsville, Carroll County football coach David Haynie will be on the sidelines tonight when his team plays host to Floyd County in a non-district game.

Haynie appealed and won a reversal of his ejection from last week's game in which Carroll County beat Patrick County 12-0. Under Virginia High School League rules, any coach or player ejected from a game must sit out the next contest.

The incident came up when one of the Carroll County players was caught twice without the proper equipment.

Originally, the player was taken to the sidelines for not wearing hip pads. He returned to the field with his hip pads, but he still didn't have a tail pad. When he was sent back for a second time, the officials were forced to eject Haynie.

Carroll County principal Harold Golding said he appealed because when the official brought the player to the sidelines the first time, he didn't inform the coach why the player had been taken out of the game. In the confusion on the sidelines, the player wasn't checked before he went back on the field.

Both Patrick County and the Appalachian Officials' Association that handles Carroll County games agreed the proper procedures might not have been followed when the coach was informed that there was a problem.
