STRONG THIRD QUARTER PROPELS BLACKSBURG PAST SALEM

Kelley Geller scored 10 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter to spark Blacksburg to a 58-48 Blue Ridge District victory over homestanding Salem on Thursday night.

Casey Beamer added 17 points and Andrea Feret scored 14 points for the winners. The game was tied at halftime before the Indians (5-10, 2-6) came out of the locker room and outscored the Spartans 19-10 in the third quarter.

Sarah Palmer and Lindsey Carroll led Salem (8-6, 3-5) with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Northside 43, Christiansburg 32: The Vikings survived a sloppy game by both teams as they defeated the Demons in a tightly contested Blue Ridge District game in Christiansburg.

The fourth quarter was decisive as Northside (11-3, 6-2) went to the free-throw line as many times in the final period as Christiansburg (7-7, 2-6) did the entire game. The Demons were 10-for-12 for the game while Northside was 16-for-31.

Crystal Barrett and Samantha Webb led the Vikings with eight points. Lisa Dalton paced the Demons with 14 points.

James River 57, Highland 31: Three Knights scored in double figures as James River took a Pioneer District victory in Monterey.

Amy Sprinkle and Julie Firebaugh each had 12 points for the Knights and Nakia Burrell put in 11. James River outscored Highland in every quarter.

Tammy Shifflett and Jen Jolin had double-doubles for the Rams (3-5, 0-3). Shifflett had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Jolin, a 6-1 center, had 14 rebounds and 13 blocks.

Parry McCluer 60, Craig County 26: The Rockets were 9-of-38 from the field as the Fighting Blues rolled to victory in New Castle.

Lindsey Coleman scored a game-high 30 points,14 in the fourth quarter, in the Pioneer District matchup.

Jody Harden led Craig County with 11 points.

Heritage 57, Liberty 54: The Pioneers got big games from Kim Moss and Annika Jordan as they pulled out a Seminole District win over Liberty in Bedford.

Liberty (3-13, 2-5) pulled to within three points with 3.7 seconds left but could not steal the inbounds pass.

Catherine Saunders scored 14 points for Liberty and Danielle Wilson added 13.

Jordan had 18 points for Heritage and Moss chipped in 17. Michelle Anderson added 13 points.

Martinsville 62, Laurel Park 46: The Bulldogs remained undefeated in Piedmont District play with a victory over the Lancers. Martinsville (10-4, 4-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Monica Johnson and Tekisha Mitchell's 16 points apiece.

Johnson collected a game-high seven rebounds and Mitchell added seven assists. Erica Brandon hit for 14 and Tiffany Watkins scored 10. Brandy Martin tossed in 15 for Laurel Park (8-6, 2-2).

Covington 61, Bath County 55: Joann Helton obviously has recovered from her stomach ache.

Limited to just a few minutes Tuesday night against Craig County, the Cougars' point guard scored a game-high 36 points and led her team to a Pioneer District victory in Hot Springs.

Helton, last season's district player of the year, made 15 of 18 free-throw attempts, 12 in the decisive fourth quarter.
