3-YEAR-OLD HIT BY CAR, DIES

A 3-year-old Bedford County boy was hit by a car Thursday afternoon when he ran in front of it on a heavily traveled road. He died more than an hour later at a Roanoke hospital.

Wesley Kyle Updike was with some relatives who live on Virginia 122 when he got away from one of them and headed for the road, state police said.

A man going north on 122 about 3:50 p.m. saw the boy run behind his vehicle and into the southbound lane where another car hit him. The driver of that car had slammed on his brakes, swerved to his right and hit an embankment as he tried to avoid the toddler.

The driver was not injured.

Wesley was flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after 5 p.m.

No charges will be filed against the driver.
