ABSHER, Edna Wells, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, October 10, 1996. Mrs. Absher was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church, and the Golden Glows Senior Group. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus Abraham and Dossie Barton Wells; her husband, Lemuel M. Absher, and her son, Ray L. Absher. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Claudine A. and Raymond D. Meador, Lois Ann and Jerry L. Hayden, all of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Theresa M. Walthall, Barbara A. Adams, Robin A. Thomas, David L. Absher, Lynne A. Doyle and Leigh Ann Kurtz, all of Roanoke, Beth M. Eads, Virginia Beach; her great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Allison Walthall, Leah, Mariah, Joel and Micah Eads, Erica and Bradley Thomas, Samantha and Amanda Doyle, Jordan Kurtz; her sisters, Hazel W. Kegley, Pulaski, Velma W. Bowman, New Windsor, Md.; also several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral service will be held at Oakey's North Chapel Saturday, October 12, 12:30 p.m., with Dr. Robert L. Alderman officiating. Interment in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. ARMENTROUT, James Lewis, Sr., 83, of Fincastle, died Thursday, October 10, 1996. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. Jimmy was a lifelong farmer, who also drove a school bus for several years for the Botetourt County School System. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, James L. and Donna Armentrout of Fincastle; one grandson, Tony Armentrout of Troutville; three stepgrandchildren, Stephenie Kennedy, Michael Kennedy and Bryan Kennedy; one sister, Callie Wilhelm of Fincastle; very special friends, Jenny and Darys Cahoon, Florence Bosserman and Alfred Lawhorn, and one sister-in-law, Dot Armentrout. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 12, 1996, at 3 p.m., in the Rader Funeral Home Daleville Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Saddler of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church and the Rev. Bruce Robinson, chaplain of House Call Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery. CALDWELL, Louise Jones, 84, of Montvale, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 1996. She was the widow of Herman E. Caldwell. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Seattle Caldwell, Stewartsville; daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and Jack Dickinson, Montvale; foster daughter, Emily Dooley, Roanoke; brother, J. Raymond Jones, Roanoke; sister-in-law, Bea Caldwell, Roanoke; six grandchildren, including special granddaughter, Cindy Dickinson; also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. DILLOW, Mildred Ramsey, (``Pid''), 71, of Bland, died Thursday, October 10, 1996, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Otho and Nina Sarver Ramsey, and was a member of the Bastian Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Dillow; and three sisters. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Jerry Eaton of Bland; four sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas Jr. and Elaine Dillow of Bland, Michael and Robin Dillow, Stanley and Bertha Dillow, all of Bastian, John and Barbara Dillow of Chesapeake; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Tom Love of Richlands; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Gerta Ramsey of Tacoma, Wash., Samuel and Karen Ramsey of Troy, N.C., Sherman and Jean Ramsey of Winston-Salem, N.C., Bruce and Bertie Ramsey of Mocksville, N.C., John Ramsey of High Point, N.C. DINKEL, Ray Watson, 85, of Thaxton, formerly of Lynchburg, died Thursday, October 10, 1996 in a Montvale Nursing Home. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Central Virginia Training Center, with over 35 years of service. He was born March 6, 1911 in Bedford County and was the last surviving child of the late DeWitt Duncan Dinkel and Serena Watson Dinkel. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Sophie Dinkel Thomas, Edna Dinkel Witt, Ollie Dinkel Frederick, and eight brothers, Sidney R. Dinkel, William Dinkel, James L. Dinkel, Otis D. Dinkel, Paul C. Dinkel, Jacob T. Dinkel, John E. Dinkel and Benjamin T. Dinkel. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 1996 at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Vest and the Rev. H. B. Enochs officiating. DURR, Robert G., (``Bob""), 53, of Botetourt County, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 1996. He was employed by General Electric Drive System for 27 years, and was a Navy Veteran. Surviving are his wife, Gracie Benge Durr; two sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew V. and Kimberly Durr, Salem, Kenneth R. and Chasity Durr, Vinton; one grandchild, Amber Dawn Durr; his mother, Dorothy F. Durr, Dover, N.J.; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Charlie Dabb, Dover , N.J. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel, 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 1996, with the Rev. EASTERLING, William D., 64, of Bedford County, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 8, 1996. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was retired from Elizabeth Arden's Tool Room. Surviving are his wife, Linda W. Easterling; son, Joseph W. Easterling, Bedford Co.; stepdaughter, Catherine Stewart, Roanoke; special friend and former wife, Betty Jordan Whitaker, Troutville; their children, Eddie J. Easterling, Blue Ridge, William T. Easterling, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, James A. Easterling, Cascade, Iowa, Mark A. Easterly, Bedford County, Elizabeth E. HALE, Sallie B., 82, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 9, 1996. She was the widow of Herman P. Hale and a long time member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jo Ann Hale, Charlottesville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Roy Griggs, Evington, Ellen Hale, Durham, N.C.; grandchildren, Kathy Hale, Falls Church, Teresa H. JOHNSON, Mary Estelle, 98, of Sumerduck, died Wednesday, October 9, 1996, at Blue Ridge Christ ian Home. She was born in Fauquier County on September 27, 1898, a daughter of the late George Curtis and Fanny Taylor Curtis. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Johnson, and a son, Ronald C. Johnson. She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Sumerduck Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Oreene Andes of Roanoke; two sons, Carlton Johnson and Vernon Johnson of Sumerduck; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 1996, at Sumerduck Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Holly Cemetery. McCLARY, James Donald, III, 18, of Route 2, Independence, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 1996, at his home. He was born July 30, 1978, in Richmond, to James D. McClary Jr. and Lynn Mallory McClary. He was a member of Sparta Presbyterian Church in Sparta, N.C., a 1996 graduate of Grayson County High School in Independence, and was attending Wytheville Community College in Wytheville. Surviving are his parents, James D. McClary Jr. and Lynn M. McClary of the home; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Heather and Mint Christopher of Dalton, Ga., and Holly and Chad Smith of Bossier City, La., and his maternal grandparents, Edgar H. and Margie R. Mallory of Zephyrhills, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 12, 1996, at 11 a.m., in the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, with interment in Independence Cemetery. NOFFSINGER, Mary Louise, died October 8, 1996 at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. Louise, known Roanoke friends as ``Tootsie"", was born December 8, 1919 in Gretna, Virginia. She spent most of her life, until graduation from college, in Roanoke, Virginia. Her parents were the late Noel Lee Watlington and Christine Watlington, her late brother was Will L. Watlington of Roanoke. Louise graduated from Virginia Intermont Junior College in Bristol, Virginia and from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. On June 2, 1942, she married Jack Ricks Noffsinger. They were married in their home church, Virginia Heights Baptist, of Roanoke, Virginia. Louise taught school in the Roanoke County System during World War II, and taught for some twenty years at Southwest Junior High and Atkins in the Forsyth County System and also at Forsyth Tech. She taught English and Journalism and helped produce such dramatic productions as ``Westside Story"" at Southwest. Louise has written and produced over a dozen dramas which have been produced in churches all over North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Louise's first love was her family. A memorial service will be held at Knollwood Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12.

OLIVER, Mildred Wysong, of New Orleans, La., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 1996. She was predeceased by her husband, Ashburne Oliver. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Trudy Oliver, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Calvin Smith, Kenner, La.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including Joanne Shaffer of Roanoke. Memorial graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Saturday, October 12, 12 noon.

PARKER, Holland Price, Sr., 68, of 819 Pinecrest Avenue, Bedford, died unexpectedly Wednesday, October 9, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on June 13, 1928, a son of the late Elijah Price Parker and Ada Bell Carter Parker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Winston Wayne Parker. Price was a retired employee of Rubatex with 39 years of service, an Army veteran, member of VFW Peaks of Otter Post #2157, and Lynchburg Elks Lodge #321. He is survived by his wife, Catherine St. Clair Parker; two sons, H. Price Parker Jr., Thaxton, Terry Parker, Bedford; one daughter, Connie Parker, Roanoke; four brothers, Kenneth B. Parker, Willie Jack Parker, Graham G. Parker, and Tommy S. Parker, all of Thaxton; three sisters, Eleanor Mae Overstreet and Judith Dianne Heck, both of Thaxton, Mary Alice Amos, Bedford; three grandsons, Chris Parker and Adam Parker, both of Thaxton, Terry Ray Parker, Bedford. SONGER, Wirt, 80, of the Maybrook Community in Pembroke, died Thursday morning, October 10, 1996, in Carilion Community Hospital in Roanoke. Born in Gi les County on November 18, 1915, he was a son of the late Willie and Eva Sue Dowdy Songer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from the Spinning Department of the Hoechst-Celanese Plant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Osborne Songer. Surviving are his son, Randy Songer of Pearisburg; and his daughter, Sylvia Thompson of Gibsonville, N.C.; a brother, Richard Songer of Newport; two sisters, Irene Smith of Newport, and Bea Williams of Christiansburg; and five grandchildren, Sherri and Brian Songer, Amy Maxey, Michele Montgomery, and Michael Thompson. WHITE, Sadie Flinchum, 83, of Radford, died Thursday, October 10, 1996, at her home. Surviving are a daughter, Louise Akers, Radford; two sons, Tommy Montgomery, Roanoke, and Curtis Montgomery, Radford; three stepdaughters, Ila Flinchum, Carlene Martin, both of Rad ford, Jolene Archibald, Kespell, Mont.; a stepson, Melvin White of Radford; three sisters, Ruth Young, Dry Valley, Sinie Carden and Blanche Kanode, both of Radford; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Flinchum and Ethel Flinchum, both of Radford. WICKHAM, Virginia Saunders Robertson, 87, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 1996, in a local nursing home. She was born November 9, 1908 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late William Abbott Saunders and Edna Riley Hawkins Saunders. Twice married, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Nicholas Hammond Robertson and William Nelson Wickham. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie S. Layman and Lelia S. Overstreet; and a brother, Hilary A. Saunders. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, a retired Licensed Practical Nurse, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Peaks of Otter Rebekah Lodge #32 I.O.O.F. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William Burke and Carolyn K. Robertson, Bedford; a daughter and son-in-law, Gladys R. and R. Peyton Watson, Bedford; a stepdaughter, Billie W. Sandbeck, Canada; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James H. and Ruby Saunders, Roanoke, Riley and Vernell Saunders, Bedford, J. Spottswood and Florence Saunders, Salem; two sisters, Martha S. Whitesell, Roanoke, Mary S. Mitchell, Vinton; a sister-in-law, Mary Q. Saunders, Bedford; a brother-in-law, Moorman B. Overstreet, Roanoke; two grandsons and wife, Thomas R. and Cathy Watson, Jeffrey N. Robertson, all of Bedford; a granddaughter and her husband, Bonnie R. and Greg Land, Roanoke; two great-granddaughters, Angela Watson, Elizabeth Watson, both of Bedford; a stepgranddaughter, Karen Cooper, Canada; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Jesse Rae Cooper, Canada. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 12, 1996, at 10 a.m. from the Main Street United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Glen Langston and Dr. Carl H. Douglass. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, and other times at her home, and request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church.
