NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

Z. L. Feng, assistant professor of art at Radford University, is a juror for the West Virginia Watercolor Society's Tri-State Juried Exhibition at Concord College in Athens, W.Va. Artists from West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky will feature more than 90 of their works in the show that opens today and runs through Nov. 30 in the gallery at Concord's Alexander Fine Arts Center.

Thomas J. McCarthy Jr. and Charles "Bugs" Tickle Jr. of Pulaski have been appointed to the local board of New River Community College. Members of the local board assist in determining educational needs, enlisting community involvement and support and perform other duties as prescribed by the State Board of Community Colleges.

McCarthy, a Pulaski County lawyer, is a partner in the Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland & Hutton law firm. He has a bachelor's degree from Washington & Lee University and a law degree from the University of Virginia.

Tickle is a State Farm Insurance agent in Pulaski. He has a bachelor's degree from Pembroke State University, Pembroke, N.C., and master's degree from Radford University.

New River Community Action has named Sally J. Mackie of Blacksburg a winner of the 1996 Phillip M. Sadler Memorial Community Service Award. Mackie was nominated by the Free Clinic of the New River Valley, where she has volunteered for more than three years. In addition to her service at the Free Clinic, Mackie has served on the board of directors of Virginia Mountain Housing Inc. and the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library. She is a SHARE program host volunteer at her church, Christ Episcopal in Blacksburg, a Christmas Store volunteer and member of the American Association of University Women. She is one of the original organizers of the Voluntary Action Center and along with her husband, Bill, has served as an emergency foster care provider.

Anne Greene of Christiansburg, formerly outreach library assistant for the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, has been named branch head of the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library in Floyd. Greene was previously a social worker after receiving a degree in sociology from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C.

Justin Jones of Blacksburg, son of Doug and Helene Jones, recently completed a residency course in auctioneering at the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering, High Point, N.C. A 1996 graduate of Blacksburg High School, Jones is now majoring in communication studies at Virginia Tech and plans to use his new auctioneering skills to help with charity auctions and to pay for college expenses.
