* The Pioneer District is honoring two people by naming plaques for them to be given each spring.
The regular-season baseball champion will receive the Emory Brackman plaque, named for the long-time sports editor of the Covington Virginian newspaper. Brackman died this past year of a heart attack.
A plaque given for the school exhibiting the best sportsmanship will be named after Johnny Gazzola of Hot Springs, who covers Pioneer District sports for several newspapers, including The Roanoke Times. Gazzola was the public relations director for The Homestead for 32 years, beginning in 1962.
``This is a way we can honor these people with something that is perpetual and will be given each year. These two have done a lot for the Pioneer District over the years,'' said James River principal Larry Journell, the chairman of the Pioneer District.
Journell also reported that the boys' basketball quarterfinal round games between Regions C and D will be played as a doubleheader at Radford University. The two games were held this past winter at the Salem Civic Center when the Dedmon Center was not available at Radford.
* Lynchburg College will honor Gazzola, a 1951 graduate of the school, with a special sports citation at its Hall of Fame ceremony Oct. 19.
Gazzola, of Hot Springs, is one of two alumni who will receive the citation this year, joining 11 other Lynchburg alumni who have been honored since it was created in 1978. Gazzola managed the Hornets' track teams and was the sports editor of the yearbook and school paper.
Aside from his public relations and media achievements, he taught and coached for 10 years in the Bath County School System, compiling a 128-26 record in girls' basketball at Valley High School. His 1995 golf team finished second among all divisions in Virginia.
