W&L MEN RUN AWAY WITH CROWN

The Washington and Lee men's team took first place Saturday in the Virginia Division II-III State Cross Country championships at Newport News Park.

Four Generals placed in the top 10 as W&L finished with 44 points. Mary Washington was second, eight points back.

Jon Gates won the individual title for the Generals with a time of 25 minutes, 17 seconds. Jason Callen, Stephen Guether and Zachary Shultz were the other W&L runners in the top 10.

Roanoke College finished fourth, with 84 points, and the Maroons' David Angell was fourth overall.

Mary Washington dominated the women's competition with 29 points. Washington and Lee finished second, with 40 points, and Roanoke was third, with 86 points.

Natasha Dorofeeva and Carson Flowers finished second and third, respectively, for W&L. Shelli Stevens was the top finisher for Roanoke, placing eighth.

SOCCER Roanoke men edge E. Mennonite

P.J. McCarthy scored an unassisted first-half goal to give Roanoke a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's game in Harrisonburg.

The Maroons (5-3-2 overall, 3-1 conference) were outshot 10-8 by the Royals (8-4, 2-3). Brian Zaks had eight saves to earn the shutout.

* Tracy Tymko scored late in the second half as North Carolina Asheville defeated Radford 1-0 in a Big South Conference men's game in Asheville, N.C. The Bulldogs (8-4, 2-1) outshot the Highlanders 10-7. Radford is 6-7-1, 2-2-0.

* David Husband scored two second-half goals in a span of two minutes to lead Marshall (5-3-2, 2-1-1) to a 4-0 victory over VMI in a Southern Conference game in Lexington. The Keydets are 4-9, 0-4.

* Hampden-Sydney overcame a one-goal deficit in the game's last 34 minutes to defeat Washington and Lee 4-2 in an ODAC men's game in Hampden-Sydney.

The Generals (7-2, 3-2) got two goals from sophomore Sam Chase. J.R. Hughes had two goals for Hampden-Sydney (7-5-1, 4-2-0).

* Virginia Tech shut out Temple 3-0 in an Atlantic 10 Conference women's game in Philadelphia.

The Hokies (6-5-1, 3-1-0) got goals from Monica Maxwell, Jennifer Pollich and Shannon Otto, all unassisted.

nWashington and Lee dropped a women's non-conference decision to Widener 3-0 in Chester, Pa. The Generals (8-3) fell behind on a goal by Kris Peklak 12 minutes into the game.
