CARSON, Frances C., 56, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, October 13, 1996 at her home. She was a founding member and served on the Board of Directors of Warm Hearth, The New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony, and Friends of the Virginia Tech University Libraries. She served as manager for the Palette Art Gallery and was a member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church. She was a long-time friend and mentor to many international students at Virginia Tech. She lived the motto often attributed to Santa Claus: ``It is better to give."" She is survived by her husband, Eugene W. Carson Jr.; three daughters, Glenell Peterson, Carlsbad, N.M., Mildred Carson, Charlottesville, Lynn Harris, Chelsea, Mi.; her mother, Katherine Carson, Spout Spring; a brother, Clifton Carson, Wise; a sister, Harriette Beasley, Buckingham; and seven grandchildren, Emily, Eric, Sarah, Irene, Carson, Duncan, and Martin. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Virginia Tech Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Warm Hearth Foundation, 2603 Warm Hearth Dr., Blacksburg, Va. 24060; the American Lupus Foundation, or the American Kidney Foundation. HUGHES, Reaford Delos, (``Jody""), 70, of Dublin, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, October 11, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. Mr. Hughes was born May 14, 1926, in Rockbridge County, a son of the late Mamont Hughes and Ocea Knick Hughes. He attended Dublin Christian Church an d retired from Pulaski Furniture after 19 years. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth M. Hughes of Dublin; two sons, the Rev. Glenn L. Hughes of Bloomington, Ind., and Jody D. Hughes of Dublin; one grandson, Grady L. Hughes of Bloomington, Ind.; one brother, C. B. Hughes of Lexington, and two sisters, Meta H. McCormick and Brenda Lee Wilhelm of Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996, at the graveside in New Monmouth Presbyterian Cemetery, with the Rev. Eddie Callahan officiating. HUNT, Lutie Belcher, 99, of Route 1, Penhook, died Sunday, October 13, 1996, at her home. Born on March 15, 1897, she was the last survivor of eight children born of the late John A. and Nora Amos Belcher, and the widow of John W. Hunt Sr., who died in 1979. She also was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Forrest Dudley and George A. Davis; a daughter-in-law, Lucille A. Hunt, and a granddaughter, Shannon Geoghegan. Surviving are her six children and their spouses, Hazel H. Dudley of Penhook, Christine H. and Hugh Rigney of Rocky Mount, Frances H. Davis of Newport News, J. W. Hunt Jr. of Penhook, Clara H. and Clifton Haynes of Martinsville, and George C. and Mabrey R. Hunt of Roanoke; 18 grandchildren, Gary, Ted, Steve, Keith, Kevin and Dr. Michael Hunt, Allen and Kenneth C. Dudley, Andy and Pam Davis, Chuck and Sue Rigney, Jean Oreechio, Dianne Vest, Kimberly H. Davis, the Rev. Rick Geoghegan, Karen Woodbury and Dr. Debra Call; 26 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Helen Hunt of Lynchburg, and Theodora Belcher and Doris H. Koger of Bassett, and a number of nieces and nephews, including three special nieces, Nannie Kate Reynolds, Gladys Toler and Kay B. Harley. Mrs. Hunt was a much loved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a lover of the outdoors and for 85 years was a member of Forest Hill Christian Church. Services will be conducted from Forest Hill Christian Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Mr. Ted Clifton and the Rev. Rick Geoghegan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Forest Hill Chu rch Cemetery Fund, Route 2, Penhook, Va. 24137. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., at Flora Funeral Service, South Main Street, Rocky Mount.
JOHNSON, Althea B., 88, of Hot Springs, formerly of Millboro, died Saturday, October 12, 1996, in the Bath County Community Hospital, Hot Springs, following a brief illness. A daughter of the late James and Arthenia Fitzpatrick Brown, she was born August 29, 1908, in Millboro, where she attended the public school. She went on to further her education at Storer College, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., after which she taught for a number of years in the Bath County School System. Mrs. Johnson was the widow of the late Rev. Earl Leon Johnson. Surviving are three sons and a daughter-in-law, Norman D. and Louise Johnson, Donald Johnson all of Lynchburg, and Leon Johnson, Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Roval, Burlington, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Millboro with the Rev. J. Dennis Rose, Minister officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. KIRK, Lisie Elizabeth Frances Perdue, 88, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, October 12, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born October 30, 1907 in Franklin County, Va. to the late Sparrell Junior and Lula Bell Perdue. Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her husband, Wray Walter Kirk and a son, William Walter Kirk. She is survived by a son, Frankie N. Kirk, Blacksburg; a daughter-in-law, Bettie Kirk, Radford; three grandchildren, Karen Kirk, McCoy, William and wife, Jan Kirk, Salem, Thomas and wife, Ginny Kirk, Michigan; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Danielle, and Taylor Kirk all of Salem; a brother Okey Perdue, Rocky Mount. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at Blacksburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Johnny Loughridge officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Friends may call after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
KUCERA, Mary B., 89, of Asheville, N.C., died Friday, October 11, 1996, in a local health care facility. A native of Roanoke, Va., she moved to Asheville in 1991, and was the daughter of the late Harrison Robinson and Sally Berkeley Boaz. She retired from Norfolk and Western Railway, and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville. She is survived by two daughters, Anna Baylor Fox of Staunton, Va., and Mary Lyne Morrissey of Arden, N.C.; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, October 14, 1996, at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. John Southern officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Clark Room. Interment services will be held in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville, Va., at 12 noon Tuesday, October 15, 1996. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or one's favorite charity. Local arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
LEE, Lee Vander, 74, of Roanoke, died Friday, October 11, 1996. He is survived by two brothers, Woodrow Lee, Brooklyn, N.Y. and Joseph B. Lee, Roanoke; nephews and niece, Johnny Lee of Eden, N.C., Alfonso Lee, Victoriaville, Calif., and Charlene Henderson, Alexandria, Va.; beloved great-niece, Ms. Monica Lee, Eden, N.C. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Williams Memorial Park. Dr. Kenneth B. Wright will officiate. LEONARD, Laura Mae, 73, of Route 3, Galax, died Sunday, October 13, 1996 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va. She was a loving mother and a special ``granny"" to her family and a devoted wife of 55 years to her husband, John H. Leonard who survives. In addition to her husband, survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Ronald N. Lundy, Roanoke; son and daughter-in-law, Donald Dwain and Judy S. Leonard, Salem; grandchildren, Alan and Kim Leonard, Salem, Rhonda Leonard, Salem, Scott Lundy and Stephanie Lundy both of Roanoke; one great-grandchild, Johnathan Miller; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lila Faye Diamond, Alma and Monroe Vaughan all of Galax, Norma and Jack Easter, Midlothian, Dianna and Carroll Delp, Powhatan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur ``Buck"" and Shirley Burcham, Buford and Melba Burcham, Archie ``Bud"" and Iva Burcham all of Galax. Mrs. Leonard was a lifelong member of the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church and her life was devoted to helping others and seeing the good in everyone. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Officiating minister will be the Rev. Jimmy Marion. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church.
