UVA SOCCER TEAM STOPS PRINCETON

Senior midfielder Mike Fisher had a goal and an assist as the No.1 Virginia men's soccer team beat Princeton 3-0 in the championship game of the adidas Invitational on Sunday in Charlottesville.

Fisher, who had a goal and two assists in Friday's 5-0 victory over Cornell, was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Other Cavaliers on the all-tournament team were defenders Matt Chulis and Scott Vermillion and midfielder Billy Walsh.

Virginia is 10-0-3.

In other sports news in the region:

* The Virginia Tech men's soccer team picked up its third Atlantic 10 conference victory with a 2-0 shutout at Duquesne.

Stanislav Licul and Brian MacFarlane each scored second-half goals for the Hokies (7-6 overall, 3-3 A-10).

* The Virginia Tech women's soccer team won its third straight match by a shutout by blanking A-10 foe La Salle 4-0 in Philadelphia.

Freshman Julie Baker scored two goals and Shannon Otto had two assists for the Hokies (7-5-1, 4-1).

* Jill McFarlane scored the Highlanders' only goal as the Radford women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at Buffalo. Radford's only previous meeting with the Royals also ended in a tie, 3-3.

* The Lynchburg College women's soccer team won its school-record seventh straight game with a 1-0 victory against Ferrum in Lynchburg.

Kristy Valcich had the game-winning goal at the 72:00 mark of the second half. Ferrum falls to 4-3-2.

* The Roanoke Star Under-14 Blue team finished second in the U-14 Red Division of the Appalachian Fall Soccer Festival in Kingsport, Tenn. The Cincinnati Raiders defeated Roanoke 1-0 on a penalty kick in the title game.

* The Roanoke Star Under-19 White soccer team won the championship in the U-19 Red Division at the Virginia Beach Columbus Day Tournament. Led by Khai Duong in defense and Jorge Rivera in the midfield, the Star defeated the Manassas Patriots 8-3 in the final. Rob Wallace and Josh Williams each scored two goals for Roanoke.

* The Salem Sabres Under-13 Maroon soccer team won the Columbus Day Tournament in Richmond. Tim Samsa scored the lone goal as Salem (3-1) beat the Northern Virginia Vista Bandits 1-0.

* The Salem Sabres Under-13 Gray team finished second in the Appalachian Fall Festival Soccer Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. Salem lost to the Morristown (Tenn.) Crush 1-0 in the final on a penalty kick.
