The Roanoke College men's basketball team was picked by The Sporting News and Columbus Multimedia as the preseason No.2 team in NCAA Division III. Street and Smith's picked the Maroons third in the nation.
The Sporting News also chose Roanoke senior guard Jason Bishop as a second-team All-American. Bishop is 40 points shy of becoming the Maroons' 24th 1,000-point scorer. Roanoke welcomes back its top seven scorers from last season's Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship team.
In other sports news in the region:
* Rockbridge County and Northside finished 1-2 in the Region III golf tournament Monday at Lexington Golf and Country Club. Both will advance to the Group AA tournament. The Wildcats fired a 311 , 13 strokes better than the Vikings.
Rockbridge County's Eric Reynolds won the individual title with a 74. Brad Austin of William Byrd qualified for the Group AA individual competition with a 76.
* Franklin County finished second in the Northwest Region golf tournament at Winston Country Club and will advance to the Group AAA tournament. The Eagles finished five strokes behind C.D. Hylton.
Patrick Henry's Lee Taylor and Ryan Patterson and Pulaski County's Webb Donald also advanced to the state tournament as individual qualifiers. Taylor finished second in the region with a 73, six strokes behind Mark Hull of Osbourn Park.
* The Roanoke Express waived goalie Scott Donaldson and forward Bryan Nelson, reducing the roster of the ECHL team to 22 players. The Express must be down to 20 before Thursday's opener in Knoxville, Tenn.
* Damian Morris scored off an assist from Chris Hewitt (Cave Spring) in the second overtime period to give Ferrum a 2-1 victory over Greensboro in a Dixie Conference men's soccer game in Ferrum.
Mike Carey scored in the 18th minute for the Panthers (4-7-0, 2-1-0), and Jabari Walker tied it seven minutes later for Greensboro (6-3-1, 3-1-0). Glen Hofstrom made 10 saves to earn the victory for Ferrum.
* Scott Rawlins scored a pair of goals to lead Winthrop to a 4-1 victory over VMI in Lexington. Rich Daughtridge scored the only goal for the Keydets (4-10) at 73:47. It was VMI's eighth consecutive loss.
* Ferrum (312) is seventh and Washington and Lee (320) is eighth after the first 18 holes of the Aubrey Apple Invitational at Greensboro (N.C.) National Golf Club. Defending NCAA Division III champion Methodist leads the 12-team field with a four-man score of 294.
* The Virginia Tech women's tennis team competed in doubles play at the William and Mary Tribe Classic, with the teams of Majka Serafini/Daga Mrozek and Katherine Chen/Jen Lampert winning their respective consolation doubles finals.
