ALDERMAN, Estrage Luther (``Lucky""), 84 of Roanoke died Monday, October 14, 1996. Mr. Alderman served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a former employee of Virginia Bridge Works and was retired from the Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paris (``Buddy"") and Ozena Slaughter Alderman. Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Ethel Webster Alderman; a sister, Louise (``Peggy"") Alderman Hylton, Floyd; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lewis and Geneva Webster, Roanoke, Powell and Mildred Black, Sumter, S.C., Ann Page Brothers, Louise Alderman Gray both of Roanoke; a niece, Pamela Brothers Garrett, Roanoke; numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Thursday, October 17, 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Alton Washington officiating. Interment in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

BOWMAN, Rev. Luther D., 97, of Floyd, died on Sunday, October 13, 1996. Rev. Bowman was ordained as a minister in the Brethren Church in 1921 and served Laurel Branch Church until his retirement in 1969. He was well known throughout the county and district for his faithful service as a minister. Rev. Bowman was preceded in death by his wife, Carsie Reed Bowman; a son, David Luther Bowman; and a daughter, Esther Bowman Trail. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and J. Edward Slusher, Joyce and Leslie Pugh, both of Floyd, Ruby and Robert Castle, Fincastle; daughter-in-law, Sue Bowman, Vinton. Pa Pa Bowman is also survived by nine grandchildren and spouses, Ron and Freeda Trail, Atlanta, Ga., Judy and Gary Shockey, Roanoke, John and Sue Pugh, Herndon, Robert and Theresa Pugh, Fredericksburg, Bob and Sharon Castle, Houston, Texas, Donna and Steve Aspell, Brentwood, Calif., Jan and Clayton Renander, Red Oak, Iowa, Michael and Cindy Bowman, Montgomery, Pa., Debbie Secrist, Salem; two stepgrandchildren and spouses, Thomas and Judy Robinson, Luray, Donna and Scott Stanley, Salem. Also surviving are 16 loving great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Branch Church of the Brethren with Rev. Stanley Hawkins and Rev. Ralph Spradling officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Branch Cemetery. BROWN, Paul Tribbett, 82, of Lexington, died Sunday, October 13, 1996. Mr. Brown was born July 31, 1913 in Rockbridge County a son of the late Finch Allen Brown and Minnie Reid Brown. He was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian C hurch and retired from Burlington, Ind. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Virginia Whitesell Brown. Surviving are one son, Bob Brown, Richmond; one daughter, Mrs. Delmas (Linda B.) Clark, Buena Vista; two sisters, Elsie M. Brown, Lexington, Louise B. Ashley, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. CARLSON, Ralph E., Major, U.S. Army (Ret.), 87, of Blacksburg, passed away Sunday, October 13, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born March 6, 1909 in New York City, N.Y. He was also a retired Professor Emeritus of the Business Department at VPI&SU. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth E. Carlson. GORDON, Jesse Willard, Sr., 80, of Lexington, died Sunday, October 13,1996 at his home. Mr. Gordon was born April 16, 1916 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late George Albert Gordon and Ellen Jane Lawhorne Gordon . He was retired form the Virginia Department of Highways. Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Gordon Staton and Elizabeth Gordon Hartless, and one brother, William Hansford Gordon. Surviving are two sons, Jesse Willard (Jay) Gordon, Jr., Lexington, William Eugene Gordon, Buchanan; two sisters, Dora Gordon Sorrells, Lexington, Ellen Jane Gordon Hartless, Lexington; also nieces, nephews and two special nieces, Carol (Jeanie) Bennington and Louise Sweet. GRAVLEY, Clinton Jefferson Jr., (``C.J.''), 43, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, October 13, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was an employee of the Stock ner Excavating Co., and was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Jefferson Gravley Sr. He is survived by his mother, Vivian Crigger Gravley of Max Meadows; four sisters, Betty Crowder of Pulaski, Ruby Mooney of Max Meadows, Melissa Poole, Helen Smith, both of Christiansburg; girlfriend, Brenda Sutphin of Barren Springs; three special friends, Miranda Sutphin, Missy and Kim Bain. Nine nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. HARLESS, Arnold H., (``Jimmy""), 74, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, October 14, 1996 at his home. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Harless was retired from Singer Furniture Company with 25 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Davis Harless. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Jack and Cheryl Harless, Vinton, Larry and Betty Harless, Roanoke, Glenda Harless and Charlie, Roanoke, Brenda and Kemp Shockley, Huntersville, N.C., Gladys and Kenny Wright, Roanoke; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Richard and Jean Harless, Blacksburg; and a sister and her husband, Betty and Walter Palmer, Roanoke. HOYE, Mason, 94, of Salem, passed away Sunday, October 13, 1996. Mr. Hoye was born March 10, 1902 on the family farm in Shady Springs, West Virginia to John Neff Hoye and Mary Virginia Watts Hoye. He attended Hoye School and completed his education at Concord Normal School, now Concord College, Athens, W. Va. After several years teaching in the Raleigh County West Virginia Public Schools, he joined the W. M. Ritter Lumber Company of Columbus, Ohio and Roanoke, Va. as the payroll clerk. His career with Ritter expands 40 years and encompassed plant management at Barrett, W. Va.( 1938-1950), Mountain City, Ga. (1950-1955) and Tillman, S. C. (1955-1958). In 1958, he was promoted to Superintendent of Manufacturing of all Ritter Mills and was transferred to the home office in Roanoke, Va. After retiring from Ritter, he was employed as Foreman at Harris Hardwood, Roanoke, for 8 years, when he retired again. In 1958, he became a member of First United Methodist Church in Salem, where he was an active and devoted member until his death. He was predeceased by his parents and brother and sisters, Samuel M. Hoye, Erie Hoye Williams and Geneva Hoye Puckett. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nina Hayes Hoye, Salem, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Bishop, Raleigh, N.C..; grandson, Alan Albert, Centreville, Va.; granddaughter, Emily Bishop, Raleigh, NC.; two great-granddaughters, Amanda and Sarah Albert, Centreville; brothers, Dewey W. Hoye, Marietta, Ohio and P. G. Hoye, Charleston, W. Va., as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at First United Methodist Church, Salem, with the Rev. Tom Joyce, the Rev. Jon Bennett and the Rev. Al Thorne officiating. RIDER, Catherine L., 4 9, of Adams Street, Waltham, MA., died Saturday, October 12, 1996 at the home of her parents in Palmer Twp., PA. She was born October 27, 1946 in Pulaski, Va., where she lived until she was 14 years old. She was an employee of Kinder Care, Waltham, MA. and she also worked for ``Contact Boston"", which is a help line for distressed people seeking help. She was a member of the Immanuel Methodist Church, Waltham, MA. She graduated, with a degree in Biology, from Barrington College, Barrington, RI and she attained the rank of ``Curve Bar"" in the Girl Scouts. Surviving are her parents, John O. and Edith Dickerson Rider, Palmer Twp., PA.; brother and sister-in-law, John G. and Sally S. Rider, Granby, CT; two nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, Va. SCOTT, William Perry (Bill), 86, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, October 14, 1996. Mr. Scott was a member of Belmont Christian Church Disciples of Christ and he was a retired, self-employed salesman. He is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Thelma Wiggington Scott; two sons and da ughters-in-law, William Curtis Scott and wife, Evelyn, Jackie W. Brown and wife, Margarete, Stuart; one daughter and son-in-law, Rowena Alice Vaughn and husband, James, Baltimore; two sisters, Beulah Board, Bertha Pitzer; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. SHELTMAN, Maynard Lee, 83, of Buena Vista, died Monday, October 14, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. He was born August 12, 1913, son of the late Walter L. Sheltman and Lydia Henson Sheltman. He was a lifelong m ember of the Stone Brethren Church, and a retired member of the Buena Vista Fire Department. Mr. Sheltman was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Decker Sheltman; a sister, Vivian S. Tolley; and a brother-in-law, Carl Wesley Tolley. He was retired from Reeves Brothers in Buena Vista. He is survived by an aunt and uncle, Flora and Earl Rowsey; and a number of cousins; also several special friends, including Red Sorrells, Sara Clark, and Phyllis Tomlin. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chester Fisher and the Rev. Warren Grant officiating. VEST, Grace Holt, 88, of White Gate, died Monday, October 14, 1996 in a Bluefield, W. Va. hospital. She was born September 30, 1908 at Staffordsville, Va. the daughter of the late David and Mary Stafford Holt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J. Vest ; a son, David C. Vest; a daughter, Alice V. Townley; a grandson, Samuel T. Burnette and two brothers, Edgar and Ernest Holt. She is survived by three daughters and four sons-in-law, Clara and Robert Bell, Newberryport, Mass., Bettie and Rodney Morehead, Bland, Martha and Donald Burnette, Pulaski, R. Blaine Townley, Bland; one sister-in-law, Elsie W. Holt, Pembroke; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. WEBB, Robert Angle (Col., USAF Ret.), of Roanoke, passed away at his home on Sunday morning, October 13, 1996. His long battle with cancer was fought with dignity and courage and was an inspiration to his family and friends. Colonel Webb served with the Eighth Air Force during World War II and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he worked as a reporter/ photographer for The Roanoke Times before being recalled during the Korean War. He was on the staff of the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of the Air Force, and served a tour at the Air Force Academy. As a member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church, he was on the Administrative Board, as well as being an Usher. WHITE, Wendell J., 69, of Route 1, Box 219, Hiwassee, died Sunday night, October 13, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Snowville on Dece mber 26, 1926, and was the son of the late Homer L. White and Lena Mazzie Dishon White. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a retired farmer, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Margaret White; and by a brother, Howard B. White. Surviving are one sister, Mae Norris, Hiwassee; two brothers, Burman P. White, Radford, Cecil W. White, Salem; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Snowville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Neil Wood officiating. Visiting will be Tuesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Pulaski County Life Saving Crew, P. WILSON, Mrs. Nell D., 80, of Christiansburg, formerly of Bishop, Va. died Sunday, October 13, 1996 at a Blacksburg, Va. hospital. Born November 10, 1915 at Dante, Va. She was a daughter of the late Charles Frank and Dora Ada Stevens Dawson. Mrs. Wilson looked for the good in everybody. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bernard Wilson; one son, Clarence Allen Wilson; one sister; and four brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Steelman of Virginia Beach and Judy Kiser of Christiasnburg with whom she has made her home for the past five years; one sister, Beulah Hall of Manassas; one brother, Kenneth Dawson of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cathy Steelman Woods, Joey Kiser Haire, Paul Davy Kiser, Terri Kiser McGuire, and Molly Wilson; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 1996 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. Burial will follow at Hartwell Cemetery at Hartwell, W.Va. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996.
