SENIORS TO SELL ARTS AND CRAFTS

The 18th annual Senior Arts & Crafts Fair at Christiansburg's National Guard Armory will run from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Area seniors will display and sell a variety of handmade items, including woodwork, ceramics, artwork, crocheting and quilting.

Among the people displaying crafts will be Sophie Phelps, who makes baskets and dolls from natural materials. Many of her designs are original, she said. "Once you know the basics, you can go from there and do your own thing." Her items, some of which require hours of work, sell for $5 to $50.

Also at the fair will be Sherman Riggins, 67, a pen-and-ink artist who specializes in wildlife and country scenes. Riggins uses a "000" pen ("0000" is the smallest) to make very fine lines in his art and thus can only work for 15 to 30 minutes at a stretch before his eyes tire. He uses pencils to color some of his works, but lets others remain black and white, producing a type of art that attracts a certain type of person, he said. "You have to appeal to the unusual, and that's what an artist is - an unusual individual. That's the way I like to think of myself, anyway." Riggins' prints begin at $15.

WKEX (1430 AM) will broadcast live from the event, and "The Over the Hill Bluegrass Band" will perform. Door prizes will be given away every half hour Saturday. The Senior Athletes of Montgomery County will provide food, and they will raffle a polka dot quilt at 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free both days. For more information, call 382-2349.

Flu and pneumonia shots will be given at the Pulaski Senior Center from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Oct. 23. The shots are free to Medicare and Medicaid recipients with valid cards. For others the cost is $7 for a flu shot and $15 for a pneumonia shot. For information, call 980-1000, ext. 60. Flu shots will be given from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Blacksburg Senior Center. They are free to Medicare and Medicaid recipients, and $9 for others.
