Giles school goes cutting edge

Eastern Elementary School in Giles County announced Tuesday it will receive speedy Internet access through the same technology as satellite television.

Hughes Electronics Corp. developed DIRECTV, which provides up to 175 channels to subscribers via satellite transmission. Now, the Arlington-based company is using that technology to speed access to the Internet for schoolchildren.

The satellite connection, one of the first of its kind, provides teachers with a quick way to access pictures and information and download data in about one-fourth the time it would take using a modem and telephone line. It will be especially useful for rural schools, such as Eastern Elementary, located near Pembroke.
