Stewart Milton had a steal and layup in overtime to give Christiansburg the lead, then made three of four free throws to seal the Blue Demons' 52-49 victory over Salem on Tuesday night in a Blue Ridge District game in Christiansburg.
The Spartans (8-7 overall, 3-6 district) rallied from a four-point deficit to forge a 44-44 tie, but missed two shots in the final 12 seconds of regulation time.
Salem won the tip in overtime, but Milton, who finished with 13 points, stole the ball and scored for Christiansburg (8-7, 3-6).
The Blue Demons made six of eight free throws in the extra period to hold off the Spartans.
Amber Reed scored 11 points for Christiansburg. Sarah Palmer scored a game-high 21 for Salem and Erin Collins added 10.
In other games Tuesday night:
Lord Botetourt 61, Blacksburg 53: Sara Moore scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Sarah Hicks added 13 points and seven rebounds as the Cavaliers defeated the Indians in Daleville.
Lord Botetourt (15-1, 8-1) outscored Blacksburg 20-13 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Casey Beamer scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Indians (5-11, 2-7).
Glenvar 65, Giles 23: Erika Hale led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Highlanders to a Three Rivers District rout of the visiting Spartans.
Early pressure defense and a big second quarter were the keys. Hale scored eight and Amanda Kennedy had six of her 13 points in the second quarter. The Highlanders (11-4, 4-1) outscored the Spartans 23-6 in the second quarter. Hale also contributed 15 rebounds. Jamie Dowdy added six steals.
The Spartans (5-10, 0-5) were led by Kristen White with 10 points.
William Byrd 63, Rockbridge County 28: The Terriers remained one game off the pace in the Blue Ridge District with a win over the visiting Wildcats.
Byrd (12-3, 7-2) trails Northside and Lord Botetourt by one game.
The Terriers, led by Brandy Allen (13 points) and Andrea Gay (12 points, five assists), converted 50 percent (25-of-50) of their shots from the floor. Byrd forced 33 Rockbridge turnovers and held the Wildcats to 30 percent (10-of-33) field-goal shooting.
Elizabeth Faulkner led the Wildcats (0-15, 0-9) with 11 points.
James River 65, Craig County 24: Julie Firebaugh scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in third quarter as the Knights (6-9, 4-2) broke open a Pioneer District game to beat the Rockets (1-15, 1-5) in Buchanan.
James River, which beat Craig County 53-40 on Monday night in New Castle, outscored the Rockets 26-6 in the third. After leading 19-11 at the half, the Knights had a 46-13 advantage in the final two quarters.
Nakia Burrell had 11 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals for James River. Amy Sprinkle scored 15 points and Melissa Baker added 11.
Sommer Horn led Craig County with eight points.
