An oil company's zoning application for a planned propane facility in Bedford County is on hold.
The company has asked that an Oct. 28 public hearing be delayed until it hears from the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Debbie Kendall, a community development planner for Bedford County. The hearing will not be rescheduled until the county hears from Central Oil.
Central Oil wants to put a 30,000-cubic-foot storage tank and a small office on Virginia 122, about two miles north of the Virginia 122 and 24 intersection.
In September, residents gave Central Oil president Don Thacker a chilly reception during an informal compatibility meeting, the first time a developer had a chance to discuss proposals with the public under Bedford County's Land Use Guidance System.
About 40 residents opposed plans for the propane facility, citing concerns about traffic, especially fuel trucks turning into and out of the facility on the two-lane highway.
The Bedford VDOT office has sent the application to its Salem district office for study, a normal step, said Everett Coles, assistant resident engineer in Bedford.
The district office will study the application to see if it meets traffic and safety requirements for commercial entrances. Those requirements deal with the terrain, location of the proposed entrance and the road or highway leading into the entrance.
