BRUMFIELD, Theda Hall, 60, of Salem, passed away Monday, October 14, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She resided in Salem with her husband, Harvey Brumfield, for the past 20 years. Survivors include her husband, Harvey A. Brumfield Sr. of Salem; three sons and their wives; five daughters and their husbands; one brother; three sisters; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of loving friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 1996, at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Welch, W.Va. Burial will follow in Iaeger Memorial Cemetery, Roderfield, W.Va. EVERSOLE, Sara Diann Davis, 43, of Austinville, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She worked in the Bookkeeping Dept. of the Premier Bank. She is survived by her husband, Doris G. Eversole Jr. of Austinville; sister, Wanda Jean Davis of Max Meadows; brother-in-law to be, David W. Blair of Max Meadows; her parents, Carl and Lillian Davis of Austin ville. Several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Hal Lewis and the Rev. Gary Cope with the interment to follow in the West End Cemetery. FERGUSON, Clarence Newton, a beloved husband and father, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Monday, October 14, 1996. He was born in Roanoke on August 8, 1906. Mr. Ferguson was a faithful and loyal member of the Ninth Street Church of the Brethren. For 49 years, he was employed by the Norfolk & Western Railway, retiring in 1971 as Purchasing Agent in Material Management. Mr. Ferguson was preceded in death by his parents, Penn Lee and Lula Fisher Ferguson; a sister, Margaret Cunningham; a brother, Ralph V. Ferguson. Surviving are his devoted wife of 59 years, Virginia Old Ferguson, who preciously and tenderly cared for him; three daughters and sons-in-law, Bette and Holland Weber, Roanoke, Donna and James McCrumb, Sunnyvale, Calif., Judith and Charles Clifford, Roanoke; four gra ndchildren, Catherine Ann and her husband, Matthew Hinkle, Sacramento, Calif., James David McCrumb, Santa Barbara, Calif., Mary Elizabeth McCrumb, Patricia Lynn McCrumb, both of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a great-granddaughter, Sheba Josephine McCrumb-Thomas, Sunnyvale, Calif.; a loving and caring niece and her husband, Lenora and Ray Holley, Salem; a great-nephew and his wife, Richard D. and Laura Holley, Herndon; a great-niece and her husband, Deborah and George Studtmann and their children, Kyle and Carleigh, all of Roanoke; and numerous other relatives and friends. A celebration to honor Clarence's life will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. John L. Huffaker and Leslie Viar officiating. FRONK, Robert Webb, 88, of Chamblissburg died Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at his home. Born on July 18, 1908 he was predeceased by his parents, Virginia Mason and Louis Pearl Fronk of Kentucky. His sisters, Julia Fronk and Pearl Fronk and his wife of 63 years Lillian Yelton Fronk. Surviving is his wife Aurelia Tate Fronk, his two daughters, Sara F. and Harry Lockett of Roanoke; Patricia F. Skelton of Roanoke; son, Robert W. and Rosalind Fronk of Greensboro N.C. grandchildren, Patricia S. and Clyde P. Moore of Roanoke; Richard T. and Kim Skelton of Floyd; Maria L. and Philip Carlton of Charlottesville, Julia S. and John McRae of Apex, N.C.; Paige L. and Craig Anderton of Roanoke; Clay E. and Brenda Skelton of Gadsden, Ala. Robert W. and Treava Fronk of Roanoke; Andrea Kidd of Greensboro N.C.; 8 great-grand children and very special friends Billy and Nancy Morris of Chamblissburg, Va. Bob was retired from McIlhany and Company and was involved in numerous civic affairs including the Chamblissburg Ruritan Club and Chamblissburg Rescue Squad. He was instrumental in beginning Rainbow Forest Baptist Church and was troop leader of the Boys Scout Explore Troop #1. He served as Master of Lakeland #109 at Roanoke in 1965 and was active in the Scottish Rite Boddies and allied Masonic Chapters. He served as President of Master Warden and Past Master Associate 1967 through 1968, Worshipful Master 1973 of Chamblissburg Masonic Lodge. He was a former member of South Roanoke Baptist Church and was a very active member of Beaverdam Baptist Chur ch in Chamblissburg. He was a devoted husband and father who loved his land and his roses. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that contributions be made to the Beaverdam Baptist Church Building Fund or to The Bradley Free Clinic. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Friday, October 18, 1996 with the Rev. Dennis Moore officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park . GILBERT, John Leroy, 71, of Natural Bridge, died Monday, October 14, 1996, at his home. Mr. Gilbert was born October 22, 1924 in Rockbridge County, a son of Hattie Foster Gilbert of Lexington and the late John L. Gilbert Sr.. He was a member of the High Bridge Presbyterian Church. Mr. Gilbert worked for Lee's Carpet for 18 years before working as a rural mail carrier in Rockbridge County for 21 years. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during World War II. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Mary Frances Sandridge Gilbert, Natural Bridge; son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Kathy Gilbert, Natural Bridge; daughter and son-in-law, Ann G. and Bob Higgins, Stuarts Draft; six grandchildren, Sara Higgins, Benjamin Higgins, Daniel Gilbert, Hattie Gilbert, Mary Gilbert, William Gilbert. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 1996, at the graveside in the High Bridge Presbyterian Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Glenn Coleman. HANCOCK, Gladys Low, 101, of Pearisburg, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, at her home. She was the widow of Z.B. Hancock. Mrs. Hancock was born in Lynchburg on January 7, 1895, and was the daughter of the late Theodore and Sarah Beck Low. She was a former resident of Roanoke and Salem. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Hancock Boggs; six brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by her son, Richard B. Hancock of Pearisburg, with whom she made her home; her granddaughter, Mrs. Bradley Shaver of Columbia, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Ashley and Austin Shaver of Columbia, Va.; four nephews, S. Rea Low Jr. of Roanoke, Theodore S. Low of Rock Hill, S.C., Donald R. Low of Tarawanda, N.Y., Douglas B. Low of Urbana, Ohio; three nieces, Mrs. John I. Cox of Kingsport, Tenn., Mrs. William H. KIRKPATRICK, William A., (``Andy""), 24, of Union Hall, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, as a result of an automobile accident. LESTER, Annie Virginia, 87, of 810 Radford Street, Christiansburg, died Saturday, October 12, 1996, at her home. Born in Montgomery County on August 6, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Silas Lester and Mary Hines Lester. She was a homemaker, an active member of Montgomery County Legal Aid and a member of Montgomery County Clothing Bank. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Methodist Women and served as an adult and teen Sunday school teacher. She is survived by three nieces, Pat Beaver, Louise Brown and Alma Beaver of Christiansburg and Floyd; a host of great nieces and great-nephews; a host of great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Lester, Andrew Lester and Robert Lester of Christiansburg, and three sisters, Susie Thomas of Christiansburg, Lucy Stigger of New River and Martha Long of Christiansburg. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 17, at the church, with the Rev. LOWRY, Clacie Mae Eppling, of Roanoke, wife of Charles M. Lowry, died Monday, October 14, 1996, at Friendship Manor in Roanoke. She was born June 11, 1905 at Laurel Branch, W.Va., a daughter of the late Arthur and Mrs. Mary Bell Eppling. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Nilah Hellems and Mrs. Georgia Snead; and one brother, Eugene Eppling. She was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Lowry is survived by her husband, Charles M. Lowry of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs. Cynthia L. Lancaster; and twin grandsons, Charles and Chester Lancaster, all of Ontario, Calif; two nieces, Betty E. Gaylor of Roanoke, and Jean S. Spencer of Silver Spring, Md.; and one nephew, Dr. Harper K. Hellems of Jackson, Miss. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Broyles-McGuire Funeral Home in Union, W.Va. with Rev. Hertzel Mills officiating. MARFLEET, John Allen, 69, of Roanoke, passed away suddenly and peacefully Monday, October 14, 1996 at his home. Mr. Marfleet was born and grew up in Miami, Fla. He was the son of Leslie Raymond Marfleet of Cambridgeshire, England and Nora Tinning Marfleet of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Mr. Marfleet served as a Naval cadet during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Architecture and completed post-graduate studies in architecture at Columbia University. Mr. Marfleet practiced architecture in Vero Beach, Fla. until moving to Roanoke in 1963. In Roanoke, he was a senior associate in architecture with Hayes, Seay, Mattern, and Mattern until 1984, when he left to start a private architectural consulting practice. He retired in 1993. Mr. Marfleet was a past president of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He also served as president of the Virginia Society of the A.I.A. He was an illiteracy volunteer and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Helen O'Brien Marfleet; a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie Marfleet Terry and William W. Terry III; grandchildren, Megan O'Brien Terry and William Marfleet Terry; a brother-in-law, Leo M. O'Brien Jr. of Reno, Nev. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Thomas P. O'Dell at St. John's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 1996. MAXEY, Donald Richard, 58, of Goodview, passed away Tuesday, October 15, 1996. He was affectionately known as ``Maxey"". He was a loving and devoted father. Surviving are a daughter, Lisa Maxey Taylor; a son, Rich Maxey; sisters, Marlene Williams, Joan Solomon, all of Roanoke; nieces and nephews, Susan Solomon, Michelle Wilson, Mike Williams, and Steve Williams. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 1996, at Lotz Vinton Chapel. Interment will follow in Mountain View Ce metery, Vinton. PHELPS, Elsie Irvin Miller, of Roanoke, died Monday, October 14, 1996, at the age of 94. She was born October 1, 1902, and most recently was a resident of Friendship Manor Retirement Community, Roanoke. She was the wife of the late Charlie Thomas Phelps. They both were former long-time residents of Madison Heights, and moved to Roanoke in 1975. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, Charles Calvin Phelps and Mary Petty Phelps of Roanoke; and by her only granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jennifer Michele Phelps Gates and Thomas P. Gates of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by her sister, Edith M. Robertson of Amherst. She was the sister of the late Odell M. Garner of Amherst and the late W. Stewart Miller of Madison. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews. While living in Madison Heights she was a long-time member of Madison Heights Baptist Church. Since moving to Roanoke she was a member of Connelly Memorial Baptist Church. Family members will receive friends at Whitten Monelison Chapel in Madison Heights on Wednesday, October 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. Graveside services will be conducted at Amherst Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 17. Officiating will be Rev. John D. Ragland, who is a lifelong friend of the family. POWERS, Carrie Mink, 78, of 107 6th St., N.E., Pulaski, died Monday afternoon, October 14, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Nebraska on July 23, 1918, and was the daughter of the late James C. Mink and Martha Young Mink. She was also preceded in death by a son, Marvin Kenneth Powers. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, where she was a former president of the Women of the Church. She was a business leader in the community for over 50 years, where she was the owner and operator of Food Fair and the Foodettes in Pulaski. She and her husband, John, started the first deli in Pulaski. She was a former president of the Pulaski Women's Club, a former president of the Food Dealers Auxiliary in the state of Virginia, and she was a member of many other civic organizations. Surviving are her husband, John R. Powers, Pulaski; daughter and son-in-law, Violet and John W. Nash Jr., Pulaski; daughter-in-law, Barbara T. Powers, Pulaski; two sisters, Mae Green, Baltimore, Md., Vada MacDaniel, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Jake Mink, Palm Bay, Fla., Judge Duane Mink, Radford; six grandchildren, John Nash III, Greg Nash, Mary Catherine Whitaker, Bradley Powers, Channing Powers, Kari Powers. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. David G. Coffey Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. RUDY, Leona Wright, 90, of Austinville, passed away at the home of her son on Monday, October 14, 1996. She was born in Ivanhoe, the daughter of the late Bert and Rose Akers Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Telford L. Rudy; and a son, Trent L. Rudy. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Following the death of her husband, who was treasurer of the church, she assumed that position and served for 36 years, until the time of her death. She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Edsel and Jo Rudy of Galax, Daisy Rudy of Austinville; granddaughter and husband, Peggy and Wes Cavin of Austinville; grandsons and wives, Greg and Marlene Rudy, Charles and Cindy Rudy, all of Galax, David Rudy of Austinville, Joel Rudy of Athens, Ga.; great-grandsons and wife, David and Holly Cavin of Austinville, Lucas Rudy of Galax. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 17, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vicki Neese and the Rev.
