COVINGTON GRABS PIONEER LEAD WITH VICTORY OVER PARRY MCCLUER

Joann Helton scored 27 points and helped Covington rally from a late deficit to beat Parry McCluer 56-50 and take the Pioneer District lead Tuesday night in Covington.

Parry McCluer (9-6 overall, 4-1 district) led 48-42 with 2:36 to play before Charity Taylor converted a three-point play to start the Cougars' rally. Helton scored the next four points to give Covington (9-4, 5-0) the lead.

Helton made three of the Cougars' four 3-pointers. Charlie Laws finished with 14 points.

Nikki Barger led the Fighting Blues with 12 points. Lindsey Coleman, the district's leading scorer with a 20.9-point average, was held to 11 points.

In other games:

Martinsville 49, Magna Vista 43: Jamie Farrington scored 13 points as the Bulldogs edged the Warriors in a Piedmont District game in in Ridgeway.

Martinsville (11-4, 5-0) led by two after the first quarter and never looked back. Magna Vista (6-8, 1-4) ws led by Sandi Reid's game-high 17 points.

Lord Botetourt 61, Blacksburg 53: Sara Moore scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Sarah Hicks added 13 points and seven rebounds as the Cavaliers defeated the Indians in Daleville.

Lord Botetourt (15-1, 8-1) outscored Blacksburg 20-13 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Casey Beamer scored 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Indians (5-11, 2-7).

Bassett 64, Patrick County 47: Heather Miller poured in 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bengals defeated the Cougars in a Piedmont District game in Bassett.

Man-to-man defense enabled Bassett (13-3, 3-2) to take an 11-point halftime advantage and the Bengals never looked back.

Holly Webber led Patrick County (13-3, 3-2) with 13 points.

Floyd County 73, Radford 46: Jill Quesenberry scored 15 of her 22 points as the Buffaloes buried the Bobcats with a 31-5 first-quarter blitz in a Three Rivers District game in Floyd.

Amy Vest added 14 points and six steals, and Sonya Hylton had nine points, seven assists and five steals for Floyd County (15-1, 5-0), which visits second-place Glenvar at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Charlee Taylor led Radford (9-7, 2-3) with 23 points.

Christiansburg 52, Salem 49, OT: Stewart Milton had a steal and layup in overtime to give the Blue Demons the lead, then made three of four free throws to seal a Blue Ridge District victory over the Spartans in Christiansburg.

Salem (8-7, 3-6) rallied from a four-point deficit to forge a 44-44 tie, but missed two shots in the final 12 seconds of regulation. The Spartans won the tip in overtime, but Milton, who finished with 13 points, stole the ball and scored for Christiansburg (8-7, 3-6).

The Blue Demons made six of eight free throws in OT to hold off the Spartans.

Amber Reed scored 11 points for Christiansburg. Sarah Palmer scored a game-high 21 for Salem and Erin Collins added 10.

Chilhowie 60, George Wythe 45: Christine Poe scored 23 points, and the Warriors outscored the Maroons 30-16 in the middle two quarters to secure a Hogoheegee District victory in Wytheville.

Megan Johnson led Wythe (6-9, 4-3) with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Shawsville 52, Auburn 43: Sarah Hagood had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Shawnees past the Eagles in a Three Rivers District game in Shawsville.

Megan Forester scored 15 points and Beth Burdette added 11 points and six assists for the Shawnees (11-4, 3-2).

Laura Underwood led Auburn (6-10, 1-4) with 12 points and Susan Wirt had 10.

Glenvar 65, Giles 23: Erika Hale led all scorers with 22 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Highlanders to a Three Rivers District rout of the Spartans.

Early pressure defense and a big second quarter were the keys. Hale scored eight and Amanda Kennedy had six of her 13 points in the second quarter. The Highlanders (11-4, 4-1) outscored the Spartans 23-6 in the second quarter. Hale also contributed 15 rebounds. Jamie Dowdy added six steals.

The Spartans (5-10, 0-5) were led by Kristen White. She had 10 points.

Marion 45, Carroll County 33: Leigh Jones scored eight of her 18 points in a third-quarter surge that propelled the Scarlet Hurricane past the Cavaliers in a non-district game in Hillsville.

Marion (14-2) trailed 19-16 at halftime, but outscored Carroll County 16-4 in the third quarter to take control.

Angie Farmer led the Cavaliers (3-13) with 11 points.

William Byrd 63, Rockbridge County 28: William Byrd remained one game off the pace in the Blue Ridge District with a 63-28 district victory over Rockbridge County on Tuesday.

Byrd (12-3 overall, 7-2 district) trails Northside and Lord Botetourt by one game in the standings.

The Terriers, led by Brandy Allen (13 points) and Andrea Gay (12 points, five assists), converted 50 percent (25-of-50) of their shots from the floor. Byrd forced 33 Rockbridge turnovers and held the Wildcats to 30 percent (10-of-33) field-goal shooting.

Elizabeth Faulkner led the Wildcats (0-15, 0-9) with 11 points.

Galax 72, Pocahontas 46: Erin Kyle scored 15 points as the Maroon Tide (10-5, 6-1) took an early lead and went on to defeat the Indians (2-13, 1-7) in the Mountain Empire District in Galax.

Kyle also pulled down eight rebounds, and Catherine Cockerham added 10 points. Senior guard Jill Cockerham came off the bench to contribute 14 points and solid all-around play. The Maroon Tide broke open the game in the first quarter, leading 24-6. Galax hit 18 of 19 free throws in the game.

The Indians, led by Mandy Dawson's 15 points, outscored the Maroon Tide by one point in the second half, but could not climb out of a 27-point hole.

Laurel Park 66, Fieldale-Collinsville 32: The Lancers built a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to a Piedmont District victory in Martinsville.

Laurel Park (9-6, 3-2) was led by Kelly Lynch, who had 18 points and six steals. Brandy Martin scored 15 points and Latarri Pritchett added 10.

Carrie Quinlan scored 11 for Fieldale-Collinsville (6-10, 0-5).

Narrows 65, Grayson County 40: Suzanne Webb scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the first quarter, and the Green Wave's defense did the rest in a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils in Narrows.

Bud Lucas added 16 points for the Green Wave, which led by 19 points at halftime. Narrows held Lindsey Carico, who came into the game averaging 19.9 points to rank fifth in Timesland, to 11 points.

Fort Chiswell 77, Bland 33: Eleven Pioneers scored as Fort Chiswell beat the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game in Bland.

Amy Coleman and Tasha Smith scored 14 each for Fort Chiswell (9-6, 6-2) and Amber Gunter added 10.

Jennifer Winters led Bland (0-16, 0-8) with 12 points.

Rustburg 39, Liberty 38, OT: Kiley Revis was fouled as the buzzer sounded to end overtime and she made the second attempt on a two-shot foul to lift the Devils to a Seminole District victory over the Minettes in Rustburg.

The Devils (9-5, 3-4) outscored Liberty 3-2 in the extra period. Hollee Franklin had a triple-double for Rustburg with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

Liberty is 3-14, 2-6.

Jefferson Forest 59, Staunton River 33: Krystal Reeves scored 12 points and Melinda Minnick tossed in 10 as the Cavaliers defeated the Golden Eagles in a Seminole District game in Moneta. Crystal English paced the Eagles with 10 points in a losing effort.

Jefferson Forest forced Staunton River into 12-of-59 (20.3 percent) field-goal shooting. The Eagles (7-8, 5-3) also were hit with four technical fouls in the game's final eight minutes.

Bath County 56, Highland 43: Katie Hardbarger scored 13 points to lead the Chargers (6-8, 2-3) to a Pioneer District victory over the Rams (2-9, 0-5) in Monterey.

Strong rebounding and Highland turnovers helped Bath County. The Chargers led 47-26 through three quarters, then were able to contain a rally by the Rams.

Tammy Shifflett led Highland with 21 points.

Graham 65, Rocky Gap 60: Pamela Oakes scored 23 points to lead Graham to a five-point win over the Eagles in Bluefield.

The hosts took a 14-point halftime lead, then held off Rocky Gap.

Michelle Sarver scored 16 points and Jamie Johnston added 11 points and five steals to lead the Eagles (6-10, 2-5).
