BIKE RIDE TO MARK TRAIL'S ANNIVERSARY

Pulaski County will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its '76 Bicycle Trail with a bicycle ride at 2 p.m. Sunday along the entire length of the trail as it passes through the county from Radford to Wythe County.

An anniversary celebration will follow at 4 p.m. at the New River Trail State Park in Draper.

The trail was established from coast to coast during the national bicentennial. It follows the Wilderness Road through most of Southwest Virginia. Thousands of bikers have crossed the continent on it.

Riders planning to make the 2 p.m. ride should gather at the Radford Shopping Plaza near Fairlawn. Those not wanting to travel the entire 22 miles are welcome to join in at any point.

From Fairlawn, the trail follows Virginia 626, also called Hazel Hollow Road, along the banks of New River. It joins Virginia 611, the Wilderness Road, through the Mountain View community to Newbern, then follows old Virginia 100, called Possum Hollow Road, along the Interstate 81 frontage road across Peak Creek to Draper.

At Draper, it turns onto Virginia 658 where it meets the New River Trail. It extends along the Old Baltimore Road, Virginia 658 and 654, crossing Virginia 100 and passing the historic Draper Valley Presbyterian Church. Returning to the frontage road, it extends to the Wythe line.

After the 4 p.m. ceremony, shuttles will be available to carry riders back to Fairlawn.
