VMI HOOPS TO GET TV EXPOSURE

At least four VMI basketball games will be televised on local cable affiliates this season, according to the Southern Conference TV basketball schedule released Wednesday.

The games and dates are: at Wake Forest, Nov.24, at 1:30 p.m. on HTS and SportSouth; North Carolina at VMI, Dec.15 at 4:30 p.m. on HTS and SportSouth; UT-Chattanooga at VMI, Jan.11, 1997 at 1 p.m. on ESPN2; and East Tennessee St. at VMI, Feb.23 at 4 p.m. on SportSouth.

In other sports news in the region:

* Lynchburg College's school-record seven-game win streak in women's soccer was snapped Wednesday by visiting Washington and Lee 1-0. Karen Treese scored the lone goal at the 34:37 mark of the first half. W&L improved to 9-3 overall, 7-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

* Ferrum's women's soccer team shut out Averett 2-0 on goals by Susan Sautter and Elizabeth Adams. The Panthers (5-3-2, 1-1 Dixie) outshot Averett 31-1.

* Hollins scored its first ever goals in its series with Guilford in a 5-2 women's soccer loss in Greensboro, N.C. Hollins (4-8, 0-6 ODAC) got goals from Bethany Tracey and Catherine Carson.

* Roanoke College's women's soccer team fell 4-1 at Emory University in Atlanta. Courtney Joseph scored the only goal for the Maroons (9-4).

* The Virginia Tech women's soccer team's three-game win streak was snapped by No.18 UNC-Greensboro 1-0. The Hokies (7-6-1) had 17 shots on the day.

* Junior forward Matt Leonard scored two goals as the No.1 Virginia men's soccer team beat Marshall 3-1 in Charlottesville. Virginia is 11-0-3.

* Ferrum shut out Averett 6-0 in a Dixie Conference men's soccer matchup at Ferrum. Cave Spring High School alumnus Chris Hewitt scored two goals for the Panthers (5-7, 3-1 Dixie Conference).

* Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal shot a 79 and 75 for a 154 total, good enough for 20th place after the first two rounds in the Adams Cup of Newport (R.I) golf tournament at the 6,738-yard Country Club of Newport.

Colorado leads the 15-team field by three strokes at 603, followed by Arkansas and Augusta at 606 and N.C. State at 608. Virginia Tech is in sixth place after a 321-300-621.

Today's 18-hole finale will be at the Metacomet Country Club in Providence.

* The inaugural Atlantic 10 men's and women's outdoor track and field championships have been moved from Virginia Tech.

The championships instead will be at La Salle University in Philadelphia on May 3-4, 1997.

Originally, the event was to take place in Blacksburg. However, repairs to Tech's track facility were delayed by summer rains and those repairs will not be complete in time for the meet.
