ABBOTT, Ernest M., 77, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996. Funeral services 11 a.m. Saturday, First Wesleyan Church. Arrangements by Oakey's North Chapel

BANNISTER, Elaine Hall, 79, of Lexington, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, in a Salem hospital. A daughter of the late James and Addie Randall Hall, she was born March 24, 1917 in Rockbridge County. She attended the public school in Lexington and became a member of the Randolph Street United Methodist Church. From her first marriage to Charles Wilson Pennick, there were two children. She later married the late Aaron Bannister. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Irene P. and Vaden Thompson Jr.; and a son, Charles E. Pennick, all of Lexington; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Lucille H. Hobson, Lexington; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Friends may call at the Bannister residence, 9 Thompson Court, at any time or pay their respects at the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday. There will not be a wake on Friday evening. The body will be moved to the Randolph Street United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The funeral service will be held at the church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Willie E. Butler, Minister, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. J. B. Lewis Funeral Service is handling the arrangements.

CARLSON, Ralph E., Major, U.S. Army (Ret.), 87, of Blacksburg, passed away Sunday, October 13, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. CHAFIN, OTHO C., ``Scoop,'' 78, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Salem. He was an Air Force Veteran of WWII. Surviving are his wife of forty-five years, Marie Elizabeth Chafin; a step-daughter and her husband, Barbara Ann and Ronald H. Haycraft, Johnstown, Ohio; two sisters, Ida Moricle and husband, Frank, Vinton, Okey Keadle, Williamson, W.V. Cryptside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, October 18, 1996 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Cecil Irwin officiating. HELVEY, Sallie Roberts, 89, of Radford, died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, in a Pulaski hospital. She was the widow of Robert H. Helvey Sr. Surviving are three sons, Charles E. Helvey, McCoy, Robert H. Helvey Jr., Lynchburg, and Richard L. Helvey, Radford; a sister, Doris Lester, Bristol. Eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 1996, at DeVilbiss Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park. MITCHELL, Roscoe Lee, (``Rock''), 66, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 16, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Coffey Mitchell; two sons, Roscoe Lee Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Trudy, William Austin (Billy) Mitchell; two daughters, Alice Coe and her husband, Freddie, all of Richmond, Alane Lara and her husband, Jaime, of Catonsville, Md.; a stepdaughter, Linda Hill and her husband, Delmar, of Lynchburg; two brothers, Edward ``Bubba'' Mitchell of Weldon, N.C., Wallace Mitchell of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; a sister, Peggy Porch of Gaston, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Willy Austin Mitchell Jr., Jesse Austin Mitchell, Brandon Mitchell, Tammy Coe Jones and her husband, Gregory, Freddie Coe Jr., Jaime Roberto Lara, Melinda Ann Lara, Eric Hill, Tara Hill. Mr. Mitchell was retired from Philip Morris, and was a member of the Pipefitters Union Local #10. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., Richmond. Funeral services will be held at Gill Grove Baptist Church 2 p.m. Friday, with interment in the church cemetery. MOORE, Gloria Vaiden, 85, of Raleigh, N.C., died Tuesday, October 15, 1996 in Raleigh, N.C. Mrs. Moore was formerly of Roanoke and was a member of the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Lewis Edward Moore. Surviving are her sister, Mrs. C.T. Hildebrand, Raliegh, N.C.; three daughters, Mrs. David W. Moore, Virginia Beach, Mrs. J.C. McGurk, Richmond, Mrs. Robert T. Anderson, Concord, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Graveside services will be at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem 11 a.m. Friday, October 18, 1996. PATTERSON, Harriet Fishburne, 91, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul M. Patterson, of Hollins College; a granddaughter, Kathryn Lyn Johnston. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia P. SHEPHERD, Harold Thomas, 74, of Roanoke passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. He was retired as a Welder from the Eaton, Yale and Towne Corporation. Mr. Shepherd was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn F. Shepherd. Surviving are a son, Steven L. Shepherd; and a brother, Norvell Shepherd, both of Roanoke. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 18, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. Rev. Stuart Kelly will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. SHEPPE, George Benjamin, 77, of Roanoke, di ed Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at his home. He was a former executive of Comas Machine Co. and Drill Carrier Corp., Salem, and retired from Gardner-Denver, Drill Carrier Division, Salem. He was a lifelong member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, a graduate of National Business College, and a veteran of World War II, and a member of Hidden Valley Country Club. He was the widower of Peggy M. Sheppe. Surviving are a son, Ben Sheppe and his wife, Kelli, of Charlotte, N.C.; a granddaughter, McClory Marlowe Sheppe, Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Rosalie V. Sheppe, Roanoke, and Jane Ann Pirrung, Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 18, 1996, with Dr. Robert Watts and Rev. Walter M. Lockett Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. SNYDER, Mary Hunt, 103, of Greenville, N.C., died Friday, October 11, 1996, in a Greenville nursing home. She was the widow of Bert Snyder. Surviving are two sons, Albert Snyder, Front Royal, and Larry Snyder, Greenville, N.C.; three granddaughters, Sandie Tate, Dottie Moore, and Becky Snyder; and one grandson, Gary Snyder; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
