IN SCHOOL SOUTH

MARINA ZELIKOVICH, JUSTIN MARLLES and DANIEL MULLEN, students at Patrick Henry High School, recently made Regional Orchestra. All three are members of the Roanoke Youth Symphony and the orchestra at Patrick Henry. Zelikovich and Marlles, both in the ninth grade, play the violin. Mullen plays the bass violin.

JOSH DEITZ, GREGORY HOLDER and SHANA WALLER, students at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School, were national winners for their Transportation/Travel Invention entry in the 1996 Young Inventors and Creators Program. Their entry was "Dog's Best Friend: A Pet Restraining Device." The students are among 18 who will be recognized at NITA's 10th National Creative and Inventive Thinking Skills Conference Oct. 16-20 in Washington, D.C.

SANDY JOHNSTON, a welding teacher at Patrick Henry High School, has been recommended by the school's principal to serve on a national committee with the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute.

The committee will rewrite a national competency exam for secondary and postsecondary program graduates, along with an exam for experienced workers.

GEORGE MILLER, hall principal at William Fleming High School, has been named to the Legislative Council of the Virginia High School Coaches.

Miller will represent football on the council and will serve a two-year term.

TRACEY OLLIE, a senior at William Fleming High School, and SHANA WALLER, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, were selected as commended students in the 1997 Achievement Program by scoring in the top 5 percent of black students on the PSAT/NMSQT.
