MILLERS' 35 HELP BASSETT DOWN MARTINSVILLE 50-44

Heather Miller scored 35 points for the second game in a row as Bassett held off a late charge to hand visiting Martinsville a 50-44 defeat, its first Piedmont District loss.

Miller scored 13 of Bassett's 15 first-quarter points as the Bengals took a 25-20 halftime lead. Martinsville made a run in the fourth period behind a pair of 3-pointers by Tiffany Watkins and pulled to the final margin with five seconds remaining.

Miller, who had 10 points in the final quarter before getting into foul trouble, went 10-for-12 from the free-throw line for Bassett (14-3, 4-2). She also had 35 points on Tuesday against Patrick County.

Watkins finished with 15 points for Martinsville (11-5, 5-1) and Jamie Farrington added 12.

In other games:

Northside 59, Rockbridge County 32: The Vikings (14-2, 9-1) got a balanced effort to down the visiting Wildcats (0-16, 0-10) in a Blue Ridge District contest.

Sophomore Amber Kern and senior Amy Heath each had 10 points. Four Vikings retrieved three steals each. The Vikings were able to out-rebound the taller Wildcats 33-26.

Elizabeth Faulkner led the Wildcats with seven points.

Shawsville 74, Giles 47: The Shawnees switched presses in the third quarter, which created problems for the Spartans and sealed the Three Rivers District win in Shawsville.

Shawsville (12-4, 4-2) outscored the Spartans 19-4 in the third quarter. Giles trailed by seven at halftime.

Sarah Hagood was 13-of-14 from the floor for 27 points and 15 rebounds. Megan Forster added 22 points and 11 rebounds and teammate Staci Harless added 10 points.

Erin Williams and Kristen White paced the Spartans with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Grayson County 58, Carroll County 52, 2OT: The Blue Devils outcored the Cavaliers 6-0 in the second overtime to win a non-district game in Independence.

Grayson County (6-11) trailed by one point after three quarters but outscored Carroll County 10-9 to send the game into overtime.

The first overtime ended with each team scoring nine points. Carroll County did not score in the second overtime. The Blue Devils had three players foul out while four Cavaliers fouled out.

Lindsey Carico led Grayson County with 22 points and Dana Whittington added 10 points. Mandy Smith added 13 points. Carroll County was led by Angie Farmer's 16 points.

Narrows 68, Bland 41: Junior center Tara Collins scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Green Wave (14-3, 9-0) won easily in Narrows to remain unbeaten in Mountain Empire play.

Bland was led by Jennifer Winters' 12 points.

Auburn 50, Radford 47: Laura Underwood scored a game-high 18 points and the Eagles (7-10, 2-4) took an upset victory on the road in the Three Rivers District.

Charlee Taylor scored 16 points for the Bobcats (9-8, 2-4).

George Wythe 57, PH-Glade Spring 39: Tabitha Cook led the charge as the Maroons (7-9, 5-3) got a Hogoheegee District victory over the Rebels in Wytheville.

Cook added 18 rebounds to her 20 points. Megan Johnson scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter to help the Maroons build an early lead. Johnson also contributed nine rebounds.

Ashley Neese scored a game-high 22 points for the Rebels.

Lord Botetourt 53, Alleghany 43: A nine-point run by the Cavaliers' Sarah Hicks with three minutes to play in the third quarter created breathing room in a tightly contested game with the Mountaineers in Low Moor.

Lord Botetourt improved to 8-1 in the Blue Ridge District this season. Hicks finished with 19 points and Sara Moore added 11 for the Cavaliers. Katie Craft tallied 14 points to pace Alleghany (10-6, 5-4).

Parry McCluer 44, Bath County 38: The Fighting Blues outscored the Chargers 13-5 in the first quarter leading to the six-point win in a Pioneer District game in Buena Vista.

Parry McCluer (10-6, 5-1) was led by Nikki Barger's 18 points and teammate Lindsey Coleman added 13 points. Katie Hardbarger led Bath County with 17 points.

Laurel Park 58, Magna Vista 39: Brandy Martin scored 22 points and Tiffany Lynch added 18 as the Lancers cruised to a Piedmont District victory at home.

The Warriors were led by Sandi Reid's nine points. Laurel Park (10-6, 4-2) also got 12 rebounds, nine points and four blocked shots from Shermika Harris.

Covington 55, James River 46: Melissa Page scored 14 points to help the Cougars (10-4, 6-0) past Pioneer District foe Knights (6-10, 4-3) in Covington.

Full-court pressure in the second quarter was troublesome for the Knights who only scored four points. Charli Laws added 13 points for the Cougars.

The Knights were led by Julie Firebaugh, who scored 15 points.

Pocahontas 45, Rocky Gap 43: On Senior Night, Mandy Dawson scored 17 points and hit critical free throws in the waning minutes as the host Indians held off a Rocky Gap rally in a Mountain Empire District game.

Dawson, a senior, also had 15 rebounds for Pocahontas (3-13, 2-7). Tessa Andrews' 15 points led Rocky Gap (6-10, 2-6), while Michelle Sarver got nine of her 13 points on three 3-point goals.

Craig County 44, Highland 32: Sommer Horn scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Rockets past the visiting Rams in a Pioneer District matchup in New Castle.

Tough half-court defense in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Rams were held to only six points. Horn scored seven in the third quarter and 11 of her points in the second half. The Rockets (2-15, 2-5) picked up their second victory of the season.

The Rams (2-8, 0-4) were paced by Tammy Shifflett, who scored 10 points.

Patrick County 65, Fieldale-Collinsville 52: The Cougars took advantage of the Cavaliers' turnovers in the second quarter in a Piedmont District game in Collinsville.

Patrick County (14-3, 4-2) was led by Holly Weber's 16 points. Fieldale-Collinsville (6-11, 0-6) was led by Carrie Quinlan's 25 points.
