ABBOTT, Ernest M., 77, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996. Mr. Abbott attended First Wesleyan Church. He is survived by his wife, Glynnette W. Abbott; sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma and Henry Kiser, Dorothy and Ernest Pearson; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 1996 at First Wesleyan Church with Dr. Dale Holloway officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. BERNARD, Reba Furrow, 81, of Callaway, passed away Thursday, October 17, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. R. ``Buck'' Bernard; two brothers, Sherman and Hampton ``Babe'' Furrow; one sister, Lura Bernard. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and William Bowles; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Patricia Bernard, all of Callaway; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Lena Custer, Altha Guilliams, Alma and Melvin Jones, all of Callaway; two brothers and sisters-in-law, B. L. ``Bill'' Sr. and Era Furrow, B. W. ``Pat'' and Evelyn Furrow, all of Callaway; sister-in-law and husband, Eva and Hobart Guilliams of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Greg and Melissa Bowles, Rhonda Bernard, Brad Bernard, Stacey Bowles, all of Callaway. BRITTS, Pauline 77, of Tazewell, VA died Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at a Tazewell, VA Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born September 9, 1919 at North Tazewell, VA, she was the daughter of the late Paul Pickney and Etta Law Britts. She was also, preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lorine Soles and two brothers, Charles L. Britts and William L. Britts. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Janice B. Evans of Tazewell, VA; Mrs. Mary B. Ferrell of Pocahontas, VA; and Mrs. Martha B. Blanton of Richmond, Va; two brothers, Roger Nye Britts of Leesburg, FL; and Jack Walter Britts of Raven, VA; twenty-three very special nieces and nephews, twenty-nine great nieces and nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews all of whom were dear to her heart. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 1996 at Perry & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Robert Wallace and the Rev. Rufus Spence officiating. COLLINS, Nancy Adeline, 93, of Roanoke, formerly of Danville, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996. She was the last of eight children born of Nancy Harriet Clifton and Putnam N. Boyd. Nancy was born June 12, 1903 and lived her early life in Patrick County, Va. Most of her life was spent in Danville, Va. She was married in 1919 to Oscar Adrian Collins and spent a useful life as wife, mother and friend to many. She was a Charter Member of the West Main Baptist Church, where she was very active. She was a member of the Danville Senior Citizen Club and the Danville AARP. She enjoyed recalling mountain stories and putting them into written stories. For the past three years, she lived at a retirement community near her family in the Roanoke area. She is survived by two daughters, Nell Collins Thompson of Daleville, Nancy Adnia Collins McDowell of Vera Beach, Fla. and Roanoke; three grandchildren, James P. McDowell of Troutville, Sarah Jane Fleming of Cloudland, Ga., Robin Erickson of Daleville; five great-grandchildren, Joseph McDowell, Zoe McDowell, Jessica Fleming, Julie Erickson and Robert ``Eric"" Erickson. Funeral services will be conducted at the Rader Daleville Chapel on Saturday, October 19, 1996, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James George and the Rev. Marsha Davidson officiating. Interment will be held at the Mountain View Cemetery, Robertson Ave., in Danville at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Visitation with the family will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rader Daleville Chapel.

COX, Rebekah Taylor, 60, of Roanoke County, went to be with her Lord Thursday, October 17, 1996. A loving mo ther and devoted grandmother, she was a member and Sunday School teacher at Green Ridge Baptist Church. She is survived by her children and their spouses, David and Renee Cox, Michael and Jori Cox, Jamie and Michele Cox, all of Roanoke, Barry and Melanie Cox, Goode, Andrew and Kimberly Cox, Salem; stepdaughter and husband, Debbie and Pete Tyree, Chesapeake; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother Eva W. Taylor; brother, Daniel H. Taylor; sisters, Charlotte Gregory, Betty Jean Hawley, Mary Taylor-Smith, Esther Reynolds. DENT, Annie Turner, 78, of Glade Hill, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Born December 12, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Stuart and Gertie Young Turner. She was a long-time member of Crossroads Primitive Baptist Church, where she was clerk for many years. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ford Dent, she is survived by six daughters and three sons-in-law, Ms. Dorothy S. Jamison of Moneta, Barbara and White Cuneo, Lena Hodges, Carolyn Jean Meador and special friend, Tony Sweitzer, all of Glade Hill, Myrtle and Ron Doucette of Callaway, Kitty and Daryl Pagans of Wirtz; one son, Robert M. Dent of Glade Hill; one sister, Ernestine Perdue of Rocky Mount; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; special niece, Edith Bocook. FARMER, Ruby Ferguson, 64, of Salem, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996, in a Salem hospital. She was employed with the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. She is survived by her husband, Paul Edward Farmer; two sons, Edward Lee Farmer; Timothy Paul Farmer, both of Salem; one brother, Kyle Ferguson, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Patsy Guilliams, Salem. Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 19, at 10 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. FIGGERS, Annie Byers Bradley, 79, of Vesuvius, died Thursday, October 17, 1996, at her home. She was born April 28, 1917 in Amherst County, daughter of the late James William Byers and Florence Stinnett Byers. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Malcolm S. Bradley. Mrs. Figgers was a lifetime member of Oronoco Church of the Brethren, and a member of the Rockbridge Area Stroke Club. She is survived by her husband, Reverend Frank H. Figgers Sr.; one son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Hazel B. Bradley of Buena Vista; two daughters and sons-in-law, Thelma B. and Walter E. Davis of Buena Vista, and Martha Ann and Pat Ramsey Jr. of Vesuvius; three stepsons, Frank Figgers Jr. of Troutville, Fred Figgers of Buena Vista, and Ralph Figgers of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Geneva F. Sorrells of Forest City, N.C., and Gayle F. Tolley of Natural Bridge Station; five grandchildren, Teresa D. McIntosh, Patti M. Campbell, Donna B. FLAHERTY, Florence Kathleen, 80, of Olney, Md., died Tuesday, October 15, 1996, at her home. She was formerly of Eagle Rock. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Janie Hayslett and Mrs. Janet Lantz of Olney, Md.; two brothers, Earl Flaherty of Greensboro, N.C., and Dr. Robert Flaherty of Easton, Md.; two nieces; and four nephews. The funeral will be Sunday, October 20, 1996, at 2 p.m. in the Eagle Rock United Methodist Church with burial in Mt. Elbert Cemetery, with Rev. Rob Hoskins officiating. KELLEY, Ruth Adams 79, of Troutville, died Thursday, October 17, 1996. She was the widow of George M. Kelley and was a member of Colonial Baptist Church. Surviving are a brother and sister in law Harvey R. and Bea Adams of Roanoke, a sister, Frances A. Burger of Troutville. Two nieces, Peggy Setchel of Roanoke; and Carolyn Wiley of Troutville. Three great nephews, Mark Setchel, Scott Setchel, and John Wiley all of Roanoke; one great niece Sonia Wiley of Troutville. McINTOSH, Eugene August, 71, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996. He was born in New Brunswick, N. J. to the late Chauncy and Gertrude Lee Taylor. Mr. McIntosh was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. S. Navy during the European Theater. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. Chapter #3. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service. Survivors include his wife, Clarice A. McIntosh; two sons, Corey A. McIntosh, Roanoke and Kahlee Muhammed of New Jersey; daughter, Antoinette K. McIntosh, Roanoke; sisters, Evelyn Sloan, Dorothy Ross, Gertrude Smith, Mae Talbert, Vivian Pretlow, Velma Branch; and a cousin, Lois Green, whom he treated as his sister; brothers, Livingston Taylor and Wilbur Taylor; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The Rev. William L. Lee will officiate, with interment in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. NICHOLS, April Lena Barbour, 27, of Roanoke County, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 16, 1996. POSTON, Verdia Vondiena, 95, of Pembroke, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996, in Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blacksburg. Born in Wautauga County, N.C. on July 4, 1901, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Delilah Baird Worley. She was a Jevohah's Witness. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Poston; two daughters, Ollie P. Mabe and Edna June Poston; two sons, Charles E. Poston and John Poston Jr.; two brothers, Charley Worley and Samuel Worley; three sisters, Dallas McGuire, Rosa Johnson, and Emma Poston; two grandsons, Carl M. (Bobby) Mabe and Allen L. Mabe. Surviving are three grandchildren and spouses, Rhoda and Roy Hutchison of Newport, Shirley and Robert Hale of Pembroke, and Charles G. Mabe of Pembroke; four great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; three great-great-granddaughters; and two great-great-grandsons. SHEPHERD, Virginia Ruckman, 86, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, October 17, 1996 at Roanoke Methodist Home, Roanoke. Born August 8, 1910 at Collierstown, Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. L. V. Ruckman, Sr. and Clarice Atkinson Ruckman. Mrs. Shepherd attended Marshall College and was employed in several sales positions in Roanoke, was married to the late James T. Shepherd, Jr. in 1932, and was a homemaker. Active in various capacities in St. Johns United Methodist Church, she organized and was the first Worthy Matron of Rockbridge Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Lee Van Ruckman, Jr., Lexington; two nephews, Dr. J. M. Shepherd and family of Yorktown, L. Van Ruckman, III and family of Williamsburg; one niece, Mrs. Karen Pearce and family of Washington, D.C.; also, several cousins. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 1996, in the Ruckman Family Plot in Hillcrest Cemetery, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., with Dr. James G. Holloman officiating. THOMAS, Jean H. 86, of Lexington, died Thursday, October 17, 1996 in the Staunton Manor Nursing Home, Staunton. A daughter of the late Matthew and Maggie Henderson, she was born June 22,1910 in Rockbridge Baths. She attended the public schools in Rockbridge County before moving to Lexington, where she became a member of the First Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board. She was married to the late James Thomas. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lillie and Jerry Anthony, Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and a host of cousins. Friends may call at the J. B. Lewis Funeral Home Chapel on Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be moved to the First Baptist Church on Saturday morning, where friends may pay their respects until service time. The family is requested to assembe in the lower sanctuary of the church at 12:45 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the church at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. LaVert Taylor, Minister. VAUGHT, Joe Walter, 58, of Bland, died Thursday, October 17, 1996, at his residence. He was the son of the late Greek Fox and Eleanor Waddell Vau ght. He is survived by his wife, Virginia H. Vaught of Bland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sally V. and Michael White of Wytheville, Abby V. and Michael Spencer of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Samuel Vaught of Bland; a grandson, Steven R. Box of Gaithersburg, Md.; brother, James S. Vaught of Rural Retreat; two stepsons, Michael Holston of Rural Retreat, Tony Holston of Wytheville. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Anne and Versal Stevens, Stewartsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Joe Raimond, Baltimore, Md.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Kenny and Heidi Walters, Rocky Mount, Michael Dina Walters, Boones Mill; three nieces, Sherry, Francessca, and Jessica; four nephews, Dean, Kevin, Ethan and Michael; stepsisters, Cindy Lawson, Emily Bowers and Connie Hobbs; a stepbrother, Mark Stevens.
