Feds won't stem heating oil climb

WASHINGTON - Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary ruled out government intervention Friday to stem high prices for heating oil, although industry and government analysts predicted consumers will pay at least 10 cents a gallon more than year than last.

O'Leary, after meeting with 19 oil industry executives to discuss the price surge in heating oil, said she was told the refiners are making ``extraordinary'' efforts to boost production and no shortages were expected.

Heating oil prices are running 20 cents a gallon higher than last year and are at 5 1/2-year highs on the futures markets. Supplies at the end of September were about 15 percent lower than normal at this time.
