Raising children can be a daunting responsibility for parents these days, so a New River Valley church and several community agencies have joined forces to present a series of programs on parenting.
The first of three Parent Sharing Sessions will be held 9-11 a.m. Friday in Calvary Baptist Church on U.S. 221 in Floyd.
Marty McAllister, an educator and prevention specialist, will lead the sessions. Parents will be encouraged to share what works with their children. They will also have opportunities to seek advice from others on problems they may have in parenting.
McAllister, who works with the New River Valley Community Services' Child and Family Unit and has led similar sessions, said fathers as well as mothers find they have much to share.
The first session will cover a broad view of parenting and look at various parenting styles.
The second session, 9-11 a.m. on Nov. 1, will focus on building courage, self-esteem and good communication with children. The final session the morning of Nov. 8 will include information on developmental stages of children. Three additional sessions are planned for spring.
The series is a joint venture of New River Community Action's Head Start program, New River Valley Community Services' Child and Family Unit, and Project FACT, a grant program in the New River Valley to help families with very young children or children with developmental needs. Project FACT, administered by Virginia Tech Resource and Referral, is funding the sessions.
The Rev. Graham Mitchell, his wife, Brenda, and the congregation at Calvary Baptist are happy to be associated with the parenting series, Mitchell said. Some members of the church will be participants. Brenda Mitchell works with the Head Start program and suggested the event to the congregation.
The sessions are open to the public and there is no charge. Parents are encouraged to attend all six sessions this fall and next spring. For more information, call the Floyd Head Start Center, 745-4396, or New River Valley Community Services, 382-8835.
