FALLING BEAMS INJURE WORKER IN CHRISTIANSBURG

A construction worker was flown from Christiansburg to Roanoke with leg injuries Thursday after a steel I-beam fell on him.

Michael Brogan was listed in critical condition Friday afternoon in the medical-surgical intensive care unit of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His age and residence were unavailable.

Bob Price, vice president of R.L. Price Construction of Roanoke, said his company is the primary contractor for an expansion project at Ames Textile Corp., located in the Christiansburg Industrial Park off U.S. 460/11 near Interstate 81. Brogan was working for a subcontractor, Amcon Inc. of Roanoke, whose job is to erect the steel framework for the building's addition.

Price was on site Friday as investigators from the state division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration conducted their investigation. He said Brogan's legs were hit by a steel beam when two columns and three horizontal beams that had been supported by the columns fell.

The accident occurred about 3:45 p.m. Price said he did immediately know how much the beams weighed.

Christiansburg police would not release any information about the accident and referred all inquiries to the state investigators. An OSHA spokeswoman said the department does not release its findings until the investigation is complete.
