CLARK, Irvin G., 73, of Salem, died Friday. October 18, 1996, in a Salem hospital. He was retired from Rowe Furniture Co. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Gertrude Clark; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda C. and John L. (Buddy) Reynolds, Debbie C. and Richard Higgins, all of Salem; two brothers, Sam Clark, Bill Clark, both of Salem; two sisters, Gladys Hayden, Sarasota, Fla., Ethel Hylton, Salem; three grandchildren, Joh n L. Reynolds IV, Martin Higgins, Dreama Higgins, all of Salem. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 21, at noon at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. James Pentecost officiating. CONNER, Paul G., 82, of Roanoke, and formerly of Elkins, W.Va., passed away Thursday, October 17, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Alice Conner; children and their spouses, Thomas and Eraina Conner, Roanoke, Paula and Jim Kelly, Petersburg, W.Va., Beth and Ray Mouse, Columbus, Miss., Janet Conner, Annapolis, Md.; seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Simmons, Greensboro, N.C. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 21. Arrangements are being made by John W. Lohr Funeral Home, Elkins, W.Va.
COOMES, Harry L., 81, of Abingdon, died Thursday, October 17, 1996. He was born in Grayson County to Dolly Emma Choate Coomes and McGuffey Coomes on November 2, 1914. He was a member of the Town Council of Abingdon, to which he was first elected in 1948, at the age of 32, and where he served continuously for 49 years, making him the longest-tenured elected official in the Sate of Virginia. He was Mayor of Abingdon from 1978-1982. He was honored by the dedication of the Harry L. Coomes Recreation Center in Abingdon in 1995; was a long-time member of the board of directors of People, Inc.; was a former director of the Virginia Highlands Airport Commission; and a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Neblett Coomes. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Delp Coomes; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Bill Darden of Abingdon, Virginia and Ron Hofmeister of Belleview, Wash.; and Peggy's daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jim White of Tulsa, Okla; sister-in-law, Virginia Neblett McLaughlin of Victoria; nephews, Mike and Robert Coomes of Galax; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon, at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 20. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 124 East Main St., Abingdon, Va. 24210, or the Washington County Life Saving Crew, P.O. A native of Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Julia Hartless Floyd. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Harold D. SHARITZ , Louise Steidley, 90, of Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, died Friday, October 18, 1996. She was born in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Herbert J. and Bertha Lamoreaux Steidley. She was a retired banking public relations officer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert O. Sharitz; a sister, Dorothy Steidley; two brothers, Tom and Herb Steidley. She is survived by four nephews and wives, Thomas C. and Nina Steidley of Maitland, Fla., Richard A. and Hilde Steidley of Winter Park, Fla., Tom Butt of Columbia, S.C., Hal Butt of Baton Rouge, La.; two nieces, Bonnie Cook of Charlotte, N.C., Dorothy Sharitz Ward of Huntsville, Ala. Numerous great-nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 20, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel at Asbury Center with Dr. Charles C. Burnett and Dr. William Rodgers officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. SUTHERLAND, Luther A., 86, of Route 3, Box 446, Staunton, died Friday, October 18, 1996, in Augusta Medical Center. He was born October 20,1909, in Fairmont, W.Va., a son of Otis Tildon and Martha Jane Crawley Sutherland. Prior to retirement, Mr. Sutherland was owner and operator of L. A. Sutherland Floor Sanding and Finishing. He was associated with Jehovah's Witnesses. His wife, Mrs. Evelyn Coyner Harlow Sutherland, preceded him in death on December 26, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Wilson A. Sutherland and Luther T. Sutherland of Staunton; a daughter, Phyllis Sutherland Craig of Vinton; a brother, Walter L. Sutherland of Staunton; a sister, Margaret S. Blackwell of Staunton; five grandchildren, Dana Diamelen Craig Johnson, Sonya Lynn Craig, Romanda Elaine Sutherland and Wanda Annette Sutherland, and a great grandson, Jeremy Craig Johnson. A service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Mr. Cecil Neff. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Lewis Price, Richard Henkel, Earnest Sutherland; Tom Jones, Keith Bosserman, and Frank Brown. WILSON, Nell D., 80, of Christiansburg, formerly of Bishop, died Sunday, October 13, 1996, in a Blacksburg hospital. Born on November 10, 1915, at Dante, she was a daughter of the late Charles Frank and Dora Ada Stevens Dawson. Mrs. Wilson looked for the good in everybody. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bernard Wilson; one son, Clarence Allen Wilson; one sister, and four brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Steelman of Virginia Beach, and Judy Kiser of Christiasnburg, with whom she had made her home for the past five years; one son, Charles David Wilson of Laurel, Md.; one sister, Beulah Hall of Manassas; one brother, Kenneth Dawson of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cathy Steelman Woods, Joey Kiser Haire, Paul Davy Kiser, Terri Kiser McGuire and Molly Wilson, and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, with the Rev. Kenneth Fields officiating.
