William Byrd stepped up its defense and free-throw shooting in the last quarter to take a Blue Ridge District victory over homestanding Salem on Thursday night in a girls' basketball game.
The Terriers canned 11 of 13 free throws in the final eight minutes. They also shut down Mandy Williams in that period, after she had scored a game-high 16 points for the Spartans (8-8 overall, 3-7 district). Byrd also held Salem's Sarah Palmer, the district's third-leading scorer, to five points.
Freshman guard Andrea Gay led a balanced Byrd attack as she tied her career high with 13 points. The Terriers (13-3, 8-2) remained one game back of co-leaders Northside and Lord Botetourt.
