KING FALLS OFF SENIOR PACE

Roanoker Billy King slipped to a second-round 75 and fell five shots off the pace in the PGA Senior Club Pro Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Friday.

King, who stood second in the 144-player field after a first-round 68 on Thursday, is tied for 14th at 1-under 143 through 36 holes.

A pair of Florida players, Bill Kennedy and Jim Jewell, are tied for first at 6-under 138.

The third round of the 72-hole tournament will be held today.

In other sports news in the region:

* State Open champion Keith Decker of Fieldale and Lexington's David Brogan won their matches to spur the Regulars to a comeback to give the Virginias a 42-30 lead over the Carolinas in the Virginias-Carolinas four-ball competition in Virginia Beach.

Decker and J.P. Leigh won their match 5-1 and Brogan and Austin Eaton triumphed 6-0 as the Virginias took the first-round lead on the Bayville Golf Club course.

* In Radford, Tony Washington's first-half goal lifted the Highlanders to a 1-0 victory over Winthrop in a Big South men's soccer game. The victory boosted Radford to 7-6-1 overall and 3-2 in the league. Winthrop fell to 6-8, 2-3.

* Brian MacFarlane scored three goals in the second half as the Virginia Tech men's soccer team downed Atlantic 10 foe Dayton 4-0 in Blacksburg. Matt Whalen had two assists for the Hokies (8-6, 4-3). Dayton fell to 6-7-1, 5-3.

* In Blacksburg, Hargrave Military Academy scored a touchdown in every quarter en route to a 28-0 victory over the Virginia Tech junior varsity team.

Adrien Pressey scored on a 77-yard punt return and a 76-yard pass from quarterback Seth Moore. T.J. White notched the other two Hargrave (2-4) scores on touchdown receptions of 21 and 18 yards. Tech (0-2) was outgained 167-88 in the game.

* Virginia Tech All-American senior Oliver Mayo won two tennis matches in the consolation draw of the ITA Collegiate Grand Slam in Austin, Texas.

Mayo defeated UNLV's Luke Smith 6-4, 6-4 in the morning and UCLA's Kevin Kim 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the afternoon. He will face Dimitri Muuzyka from Duke this morning.

* Radford girls' basketball coach Brenda King is on a medical leave of absence and will miss the rest of the season.

King, who is in her ninth year as coach of the Bobcats, missed both games this past week. In her place, junior varsity coach Wayne Pridgen took over varsity duties.

* William Fleming's Flavia Norguiera defeated Ann Taylor Guill from E.C. Glass 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at Countryside to advance to the Northwest Region final on Tuesday.

Norguiera, a junior transfer from Brazil, will meet an undetermined foe at 9:30 a.m. at E.C. Glass for the regional title and a bid to the Group AAA tournament.

In doubles action, Guill teamed with Spencer Brown to defeat Pulaski County's Preya Acherya and Kristen Beeler 6-3, 6-3 and advance to Tuesday's final, also at E.C. Glass.
