The rain probably was no match for the tears falling at Lynchburg Christian Academy.
North Cross knocked off the Bulldogs, ranked No.1 among the state's Division II private schools, 7-6 Friday night in a game marked by a torrential downpour.
LCA (6-1 overall, 4-1 Virginia Independent Conference), got on the board with 9:23 left in the fourth quarter when Alex Torrie ran it in from 22 yards.
When Lynchburg went for a two-point conversion, however, Steven Nicholas sacked the Bulldogs' quarterback.
North Cross (4-2, 2-1) got the ball on its own 38-yard line, and after a couple big third-down runs by Jason Ward, Carter Lee broke through for a 6-yard touchdown run. Joe Thielecke kicked the extra point with 1:50 to go.
Three great defensive plays held off the Bulldogs in the end. Bill Pattisall stopped an end around, Mason Brown knocked down a pass and Hunter Smith recovered a fumble after a sack.
