THE PATTERSON PRINCIPLE

Based on his 31 years as a high school principal, what advice and suggestions would Robert Patterson have for a new principal? He said:

1. Be an instructional leader and demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence.

2. Create a climate of high expectations for students, teachers and other staff members.

3. Observe classes on a regular basis and evaluate them for teachers.

4. Stay updated on technology.

5. Strive to give teachers more time to do their job by reducing administrative work.

6. Consult with others, welcome new ideas and be responsive to good suggestions.

7. Promote a positive atmosphere among students and staff and publicize their accomplishments.

8. Be knowledgeable about and responsible for school finances.

9. Provide staff with the supplies and equipment necessary to do a good job.

10. Supervise halls, restrooms and other areas of the building between classes and throughout the school day.

11. Be available to students, parents and staff.

12. Be willing and able to handle difficult problems.

13. Treat all students and staff alike.

14. Be able to handle large quantities of paperwork.

15. Be able to handle many different situations in a short period of time.

16. Use time efficiently.

17. Attend school activities on a regular basis.

18. Motivate parents to become involved in academics and athletics.

19. Be empathetic.

20. Be enthusiastic and have a good sense of humor.
