ALEXANDER, Pierce DeNance, 5-week-old son of the Rev. and Mrs. Gary (Darledia) Alexander of Wirtz, died Thursday, October 17, 1996. He was born September 11, 1996, in Roanoke. He is also survived by two sisters, Penee Clayborne and Alicia Alexander, and one brother, Phillip Clayborne, all of Wirtz; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Alexander of Pearisburg, and Mr. and Mrs. James (Elsie) Starkey of Wirtz; godparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry (Shirley) Johnson of Pearisburg; uncles, aunts and cousins. BRATTON, Josephine, 77, of Castlewood, died Friday, October 18,1996 at her home. She was a native of Russell County. She was a cafeteria worker and manager at Castlewood High School for 15 years and a member of Fort Gibson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Shannon, and her second husband, Woodrow Bratton. Survivors include three daughters, Glenna Hensdill, Belva Sutherland and Mary Bratton, all of Castlewood; three sons, Charles Shannon, Hardy, Robert C. Bratton, Hurricane, W. Va. and Tom Bratton, Lebanon; one sister, Kathryn Elliott, Franklin, Ohio; two brothers, James Adams, Jackson, Tenn. and C. A. Adams, Jr., Laurel, Md.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Fort Gibson United Methodist Church, Castlewood, with the Rev. Larry Rye officiating. Burial will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlyle Ring, R. L. Culbertson, Jim Kiser, Dallas Hubbard, Garland Cox, Paul King, Glenn Wilson and Tom Cook. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m . Sunday at Castlewood Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the time of service. BRYANT, Ramona Sowers, 64, of Pennacle, N.C., and formerly of Elliston, passed away Friday, October 18, 1996. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Earl Bryant; six children and their spouses, Pam Horne, Blacksburg, Paul and Dreama Abbott, Bedford, Russell and Beth Bryant, Thaxton, Kenneth and Debbie Bryant, North Carolina, Kevin and Dianne Bryant, North Carolina, Perry and Sheila Bryant; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Freda Godfrey, North Carolina, Sylvia Baker, Portsmouth, Gail Whitt, Arkansas; mother-in-l aw, Frankie Beardmore, Salem. DEANER, Ann Ruth, 68, of Salem, died Friday, October 18, 1996. She was born in Batesburg, S.C., and had been a longtime Salem resident. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her parents, James and Sally Miller. Survivors include her husband, Bernard T. Deaner of Salem; a dau ghter and son-in-law, Ann P. and Frank Barnard of Botetourt; a son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Michele Lester of Richmond; three grandchildren, Andrew, Jeremy and Hannah Lester, and many other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, October 21, 1996, in the John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Tom Joyce officiating. GEE, Oliver LeRoy, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 18, 1996. Mr. Gee retired from the U. S. Postal Service with 27 years of service. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Virginia R. Gee; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Becky Gee; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Turman; grandson and wife, Wayne and Kathy Gee; great-granddaughter, Lauren Gee; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Bob Bauer, Dorothy and Rev. Karl Crowe; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Maxine Gee; one very special, dear friend, Loretta Edge. GOING HOME MEMORIAL CELEBRATION, Taylor, Sr, David Jackson, son of the late Mary Melinda Hale and Berma Henry Taylor of Roanoke passed away on Thursday October 10th, 1996 at the Wilmington Hospital. GREEN, Henry Roosevelt, 63, of Wirtz, VA, died Wednesday, October 16, 1996. HOOPER, Lillian Board, 92, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 17, 1996 after a long illness. She was born on May 1, 1904. She was the widow of Robert L. Hooper. LOGAN, Margaret DeBusk, 94, of Salem, died Friday, October 18, 1996, at her home. She was the widow of Baxter White Logan. She was born October 29, 1901, in Washington County and moved to Roanoke in 1918. She attended Radford College and taught first grade in Roanoke County schools for 35 years. She was a member of the Salem Presbyterian Church and is survived by two daughters, June L ogan Haydon, Charleston, W.Va., Patricia Logan Rutherford, Radford; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 21, 2 p.m. at the Salem Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dean Lindsey officiating. Interment will follow in the East Hill Cemetery, Salem. McINTOSH, Eugene August, 71, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996. He was born in New Brunswick, N. J. to the late Chauncy and Gertrude Lee Taylor. Mr. McIntosh was a World War II veteran, serving in the U. S. Navy during the European Theater. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. Chapter #3. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service. Survivors include his wife, Clarice A. McIntosh; one son, Corey A. McIntosh, Roanoke; a nephew raised as a son, Kahlee Muhammed of New Jersey; daughter, Antoinette K. McIntosh, Roanoke; two nieces raised as daughters, Kim Walker, Angel Hargett, both of Martinsville; sisters, Evelyn Sloan, Dorothy Ross, Gertrude Smith, Mae Talbert, Vivian Pretlow, Velma Branch; and a cousin, Lois Green, whom he treated as his sister; brothers, Livingston Taylor and Wilbur Taylor; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The Rev. William L. Lee will officiate, with interment in Williams Memorial Park, with the V.F.W. Post #1264 rendering military honors. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the VAMC in Salem for the tender care they provided during Mr. McIntosh's illness.

MOHLER, Emma Barger, 91, of Lexington, died Friday, October 18,1996 in Stonewall Jackson Extended Care Facility. Born in West Virginia June 6,1905, she was the daughter of the late Timothy Paul Barger and Jane Duncan Barger. Mrs. Mohler was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she taught a Kindergarten Sunday School Class for over 35 years. A long-time resident of the community where she and her husband had businesses in Rockbridge Co., she was former owner of Mohler's Ham House Restaurant. She was also a member of the Women's Chapter of the Loyal Order of Moose. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Wallace Mohler, Sr. and son, Jesse Wallace Mohler, Jr. and brothers, Luther, Ernest, James and Timothy Wessley Barger. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Betty M. and George Mack, Lexington and Bay Shore, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, Edward Lewis, Sr. and Ann C. Mohler, Lexington; two sisters, Daisy Barger Kruhm and Blaney Barger Marlow, both of Silver Spring, Md.; one brother, Roger Paul Barger, Glenwood, Md.; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 21, 1996 at 11 a.m. from Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Patrick officiating. NEWCOMB, Robert Earl, of 208 Highview Dr., Blacksburg, died there Saturday, October 19, 1996, after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Nadine J. Newcomb; three children, Nikki Taylor of Santa Cruz, Calif., John Newcomb and his wife, Jennifer of Blacksburg, and Steven Newcomb and his wife, Vicky of Rochester, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren, Mary Kay Duffie, Taylor Albright, Peter Newcomb, Terry Newcomb, Elisabeth Newcomb, Robert (``Bobby"") Newcomb and William (``Billy"") Newcomb. Mr. Newcomb's brother, Edward Newcomb, lives in Bellevue, Washington. Mr. Newcomb was a corporate attorney for Campbell Soup Co. for 35 years. He was a graduate of Amherst College and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. While living in Glassboro, N.J., he served the community as an elected member of the Board of Education and as a member of the Glassboro Planning Board. For many years he was a faithful Trustee of the Glassboro Public Library. He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Glassboro. He and his wife moved to Blacksburg in June, 1988, after their retirement. Bob enjoyed riding his bicycle all over town, playing bridge, gardening and acting as Leader of a ``Great Books"" discussion group. A memorial service will be held in Northside Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 27, 1996, at 4 .m., with the Rev. Hugh Springer officiating. The church is at 1017 N. Progress St., N.W. NICHOLS, April Lena Barbour Harris, 27, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 1996. She is survived by three children, Ruth Ann, Josie, Rachel Barbour; her mother, Mary Barbour; two brothers, Terry Cupp, Herman Cupp; three sisters, Gloria Donathan, Doris Cockerham and Little Mary; and several nieces and cousins. PRICKETT, Pauline Elizabeth Layman, 97, of Richmond, and formerly of Troutville, departed this life Wednesday, October 9, 1996, in a Richmond nursing home. The widow of Minter Jackson Prickett; and the daughter of George W. and Mary Lydia (Lillie) Salome Moomaw Layman, she was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Moomaw Layman, who was killed in World War I; three sisters, Marie Layman Yokeley, of Meadowview and Roanoke, Genevieve Layman Kinzie, Troutville, and Dorothy Layman Cline, Roanoke. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Elizabeth Prickett Hickin, Richmond; one nephew, Joseph G. Kinzie Jr., Troutville; three nieces, Dorothy Kinzie Weeks, Hilliard, Ohio, Martha Kinzie Dillon, Rialto, Calif., and Virginia Kinzie Visser, Troutville; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. RATCLIFF, Anita , (``Ann""), 55, of Blacksburg, died Friday, October 18, 1996 in Radford Community Hospital. Ann was born in Christiansburg, Va. on June 28, 1941. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Hoback, and her stepfather, Harry B. Sheppard. Survivors include her husband, Charles R. ``Randy"" Ratcliff, Jr.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Joe and Susan White, Randy Lee White, all of Christiansburg and Jason Ratcliff, Blacksburg; a daughter, Karen White Williams, Christiansburg; her mother, Madeline S. SPRINKLE, Thyra Fortune Derflinger, 94, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 19,1996, at her residence. She was born in Nelson County, Va. July 19, 1902, the daughter of the late Phillip William and Eva Loving Derflinger. Mrs. Sprinkle graduated from National Business College and became an accountant for Metropolitan Insurance in Roanoke. She met the late James Reuben Sprinkle in Roanoke and they married on April 11, 1925. Mrs. Sprinkle enjoyed art, and was particularly fond of china painting and egg decorating. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, James Kent and Helen Oglesby Sprinkle of State College, Penn.; five grandchildren, James Sprinkle of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Stuart Sprinkle of Candia, New Hampshire, Helen Sprinkle of New York, N.Y., Mary Sprinkle of Marietta, Ohio, Thomas Sprinkle of Rocky River, Ohio; ten great-grandchildren, Sarah Sprinkle, Lindsey Sprinkle, Laura Sprinkle, Steven Sprinkle, Alessandra Muller-Thym, Benjamin Linn, Kathryn Linn, Amanda Sprinkle, Margaret Sprinkle, William Sprinkle; and a sister, Orie Derflinger Walthall of Roanoke. SWARTHOUT, Bert, 65, a resident of 815 Birdie Drive, Abingdon, died Friday, October 18, 1996, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Pampa, Texas, and had lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., before moving to Abingdon 13 years ago. He was retired from the Pittston Coal Group as a vice-president of Materials Management. He was a Senior Deacon in Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 A.F.&A.M., a Past President of Desert Sands Shrine Club, a member of the Scottish Rite in Denver, Colo., a member of Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Jerico Temple of Kingsport, Tenn., and the Royal Order of Jesters, Chapter 183, Kingsport, Tenn. He served with the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War and was of the Methodist faith. Survivors include his wife, Mickey Swarthout of Abingdon; two daughters, Vicki Svoboda of Shelton, Neb., and Tobi Swarthout of Abingdon; one son, Richard Swarthout of Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren; one niece, and two nephews. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel by Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48, A.F.&A.M. THOMPSON, Hattie Ferguson, 88, of Roanoke, died in Richmond on Saturday, October 19, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Grover A. Thompson. She was the daughter of James W. and Ollie Shaver Ferguson. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Trotti of Richmond, and a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Thompson of Cary, N.C.; also, grandchildren, Beth Schneir, Greg Thompson, Gwen Thompson, Meg Richardson and Michael Trotti, and great-grandchildren, Jessica and Ashley Smith, Danielle Thompson, Leighann Thompson, Ian Richardson, Colton Richardson, Sophie Trotti Lux and Mark Thompson. She is also survived by brothers, Guy L. Ferguson and Roy W. Ferguson of Roanoke; a sister, Mildred Ferguson of Vinton, and many nieces and nephews. TOWNLEY, Alvey Howard, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 18, 1996, in a local hospital after a long illness. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a member of the Kazim Temple, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Lakeland Lodge #190. Mr. Townley was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church, and served during World War II in the Navy as an Electricians Mate. He retired as an electrician in 1982. Surviving are his loving wife, Frances Townley; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Kevin Shelton; a son, Alan Townley, and a grandchild, Stephenie Townley, all of Roanoke; brother, Jessie Townley of Bland, and a good friend, Kathy Kinzie of Roanoke, who cared for Mr. Townley during his illness. Graveside services with Masonic rites by Lakeland Lodge #190 will be in Evergreen Burial Park at 11 a.m. Monday, October 21, 1996, with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. UPDIKE, Christine Ayers, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, October 18, 1996 at her home. She was predeceased by her husband, Glenwood Updike, and a son, Clifton Updike. Surviving are a son, Carlton L. Updike, Salem; a daughter, Carolyn D. Howard, Roanoke; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert E. WALTERS, Edgar William, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, October 19, 1996. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He worked for 22 years in Maryland as a dairy farmer and 18 years at the National Institute of Health. He is survived by his wife, Alice G. Walters; sisters, Anna W. Conner and Reecie W. Lancaster; stepchildren, Roger and Judy Bagley, Vera Ornduff; sisters-in-law, Grace Collier, Zelda Wagner. Also surviving are four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 1996, in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Stephen Dye officiating. WILLARD, Lenford Avery, 73, of 121 Eighth Street, N.W., Pulaski, died early Saturday, October 19, 1996, at his home after a long illness. Born in Carroll County on December 25, 1922, he was the only son of the late Williamson Hobart Willard and Della Jessup Willard of Laurel Fork. Mr. Willard was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. His medals included the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Mr. Willard worked for the Chevrolet dealership in Pulaski for several years and was retired from Appalachian Electric Power Company. He is survived by his wife, Eileen Akers Willard; a daughter, Suzanne Eileen Willard of Pulaski, and five sisters, Ollie Webb Sharpe and Belva Webb Davis of Hillsville, Elsie Webb Banks of Stuart, Pauline Willard Hamrick of Fallston, N.C., and Trudy Willard Cloud of Laurel Fork. Funeral services will be private and there will be no visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gardner Memorial Cemetery in Hillsville. Arrangements are by Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski.
