FERRUM NIPS LOSING WAYS WITH OT WIN

Gus Seyler-Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal in overtime to lift Ferrum to a 12-9 victory over visiting Chowan on Saturday, snapping the Panthers' nine-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Chowan's Chris Coleman blocked a Ferrum extra point and returned it for two points to tie the game at 9 early in the third quarter.

Chowan (1-6) managed only 20 yards rushing, including Johnny Nowell's 1-yard TD run. Emmanuel Baker ran for 168 yards on a school-record 42 carries for Ferrum (1-5).

The Panthers scored on a 31-yard field goal by Seyler-Schmidt and Jon Hannah's 29-yard interception return in the third quarter. Seyler-Schmidt hit the extra point, but Ferrum was called for holding. On the subsequent play, Coleman blocked the kick, picked up the loose ball and ran it in to tie the game.

In other state games:

Washington and Lee 17, Hampden-Sydney 13: In Lexington, senior Aaron Wilkinson scored the first touchdown of his career and Seth McKinley also ran for a score as the Generals downed the Tigers in an ODAC game.

The victory marks the first time W&L (2-4, 1-2) has defeated Hampden-Sydney (2-4, 1-3) in consecutive seasons since 1980-81.

Bridgewater 30, Guilford 16: In Greensboro, N.C., Chad Rowland passed for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and Michael Padgett booted three field goals to carry the Eagles past the Quakers in the ODAC.

Rowland completed 16 of 32 passes for the Eagles (4-2, 2-1). Guilford falls to 2-4, 1-2.

James Madison 31, Richmond 27: In Richmond, Jay Jones had 217 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, all in the second half, and set a record for kickoff returns as the Dukes rallied to beat the Spiders in a Yankee Conference game.

Jones return the opening kickoff of the second half 96 yards to set up a touchdown that tied the score at 17 for the Dukes (6-1, 4-0). After Richmond (2-5, 1-4) scored 10 consecutive points, Jones returned another kickoff 99 yards for a score late in the third quarter.

With 8:25 remaining in the game, Greg Maddox hit Jones with a 32-yard TD pass for the winning score.

The wide receiver had 268 yards on six kickoff returns, setting a Division I-AA record.

The Spiders put together a final drive that ended with an incompletion in the end zone as time expired.

William and Mary 30, Villanova 21: Mike Cook threw two touchdown passes, and the Tribe held the Wildcats to minus-39 rushing yards on the way to a Yankee Conference victory in Villanova, Pa.

William and Mary (5-2, 3-1) recorded 10 sacks in coming back from a 14-0 deficit. Cook completed 21 of 39 passes for 279 yards, including a 3-yard pass to Jay Hamric that put William and Mary ahead to stay at 24-14 with 10:26 left in the third quarter.

Quarterback Clint Park threw three touchdown passes for Villanova (5-2, 3-1).

Liberty 23, Western Kentucky 14: In Bowling Green, Ky., Courtney Freeman caught 11 passes for a school-record 186 yards and a touchdown as the Flames (2-5) dealt the Hilltoppers (4-4) their fourth straight loss.
