MAGNA VISTA PROVES ITSELF

Magna Vista, the state's top-ranked Group AA team, took control of the Piedmont District race Saturday night with a 29-0 victory over rival Martinsville in Ridgeway.

The Warriors (7-0 overall, 2-0 district) held fourth-ranked Martinsville to 92 yards of total offense while amassing 252 yards of their own.

Travis Preston led Magna Vista with 119 yards on 25 carries and Ceron Penn had 95 yards on 12 carries.

Martinsville's record 6-1 overall, 1-1 in the district.

Giles 50, Bland County 22: The Spartans ran to an early 22-point lead and cruised to the non-district victory over the Bears in Bland.

Giles (8-0) had 278 yards of total offense and was led by Chris Ratcliffe's 97 yards on 12 carries.

Bland County (5-3) was held to 172 yards of total offense.

Bassett 23, Fieldale-Collinsville 13: The Bengals' Carl Watkins rushed for 194 yards to spark a Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers in Collinsville.

Bassett (5-3, 2-1) scored first on the first of Watkins' three touchdowns. Kevin Franklin returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to tie the score at 6 for Fieldale-Collinsville (4-3, 1-1).

Bassett scored the next 10 points before Franklin ran 8 yards for a touchdown and the extra-point kick made the score 16-13. Watkins ended the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.

Appomattox County 29, Liberty 6: The Raiders jumped on the Minutemen early and cruised to a Seminole District victory over the Raiders in Bedford.

Liberty (4-4, 2-2) was led by Tim Parker, who rushed for 129 yards on 13 carries.

Appomattox County was paced by Forrest Moore's 175 yards on 17 carries.
